Wheat is highly valued for its gluten content, which makes it ideal for bread, pasta, and pastry production.

Question 6

Which cereal crop is a major staple in the Sahel and Sudan savannah zones due to its extreme drought tolerance?

Accepted Answer

Millet is a staple food in the Sahel and Sudan savannah zones, being one of the most drought-tolerant cereal crops.

Question 7

What is the definition of ecology in the context of cereal production?

Accepted Answer

Ecology refers to the study of the relationships between living organisms, such as crops, and their physical environment.

Question 8

Which of the following cereal crops requires high rainfall, specifically 1,000 mm to 2,500 mm per annum, or continuous flooding?

Accepted Answer

Rice requires high rainfall (1,000 mm to 2,500 mm per annum) or continuous flooding.

Question 9

What is the optimum temperature range for maize and rice growth?

Accepted Answer

Maize and rice grow best in temperatures between 20°C and 35°C.

Question 10

Which climatic factor is preferred to be dry during harvesting to facilitate proper grain drying?

Accepted Answer

Dry atmospheric conditions (low relative humidity) are preferred during harvesting to facilitate proper grain drying.

Question 11

Which cereal crop thrives in heavy clay or clay-loam soils due to their high water-holding capacity?

Accepted Answer

Rice thrives in heavy clay or clay-loam soils because clay has a high water-holding capacity, which helps maintain flooded conditions.
