Cropping Patterns for SS 1

Question 1

What is the meaning of a cropping pattern?

Accepted Answer

Cropping pattern refers to the spatial and temporal arrangement of crops on a given area of land over a specific period.

Question 2

In the context of cropping patterns, what does 'spatial arrangement' refer to?

Accepted Answer

Spatial arrangement refers to how crops are physically distributed across the field, including row spacing, plant density, and the mixing of different crop species.

Question 3

What does 'temporal arrangement' signify in cropping patterns?

Accepted Answer

Temporal arrangement refers to the timing and sequence of planting and harvesting crops on the same piece of land over different seasons or years.

Question 4

Choosing an appropriate cropping pattern directly influences which of the following?

Accepted Answer

An appropriate cropping pattern directly influences soil health, resource utilization, and overall crop yield.

Question 5

How do systematic cropping patterns help in maintaining soil fertility?

Accepted Answer

Systematic cropping patterns maintain soil fertility by alternating or mixing crops with different nutrient requirements, such as incorporating leguminous crops to fix atmospheric nitrogen.

Question 6

What is a key mechanism by which cropping patterns aid in pest and disease control?

Accepted Answer

Cropping patterns aid in pest and disease control by changing crop species, which breaks the life cycles of pests and pathogens that build up with continuous single-crop cultivation.

Question 7

How do cropping patterns contribute to weed suppression?

Accepted Answer

Cropping patterns contribute to weed suppression when dense canopy crops shade out weeds, reducing their growth and the need for chemical herbicides.

Question 8

Which of the following describes how cropping patterns help in erosion control?

Accepted Answer

Cropping patterns help in erosion control by keeping the soil covered with crops of different growth habits throughout the year, protecting the soil surface from wind and water.

Question 9

How do cropping patterns help minimize risk for farmers?

Accepted Answer

Cropping patterns minimize risk by growing a variety of crops, ensuring that if one crop fails due to unfavorable conditions, the farmer can still harvest and sell other crops.

Question 10

What is a benefit of cropping patterns regarding resource utilization?

Accepted Answer

Cropping patterns allow for better utilization of sunlight, water, and soil nutrients from different soil layers because different crops have different root depths and canopy structures.

Question 11

Which cropping pattern involves growing only one type of crop on a piece of land at any given time?

Accepted Answer

Monocropping, also known as sole cropping, is the practice of growing only one type of crop on a piece of land at any given time.

Question 12

What is a significant risk associated with continuous monocropping without soil conservation measures?

Accepted Answer

Continuous monocropping increases the risk of total crop failure and soil degradation if practiced without soil conservation measures.

Question 13

Which cropping pattern involves growing two or more crops simultaneously on the same piece of land without any distinct row arrangement?

Accepted Answer

Mixed cropping is the practice of growing two or more crops simultaneously on the same piece of land without any distinct row arrangement.

Question 14

What is the practice of growing two or more crops simultaneously on the same piece of land in a definite spatial or row arrangement?

Accepted Answer

Intercropping is the practice of growing two or more crops simultaneously on the same piece of land in a definite spatial or row arrangement.

Question 15

What is the key difference between mixed cropping and intercropping?

Accepted Answer

Mixed cropping features random plant distribution, while intercropping uses organized rows.

Question 16

According to the principles of crop rotation, what is the role of leguminous crops?

Accepted Answer

Leguminous crops must be included in the rotation to restore soil nitrogen.

Question 17

What is a crucial rule regarding crops from the same botanical family in a crop rotation plan?

Accepted Answer

Crops belonging to the same botanical family should not follow each other to prevent the carryover of shared pests and diseases.

Question 18

Which cropping pattern involves planting a second crop into an existing standing crop before the first crop is harvested?

Accepted Answer

Relay cropping is the practice of planting a second crop into an existing standing crop before the first crop is harvested.

Question 19

What is strip cropping, and what is its primary purpose?

Accepted Answer

Strip cropping is the practice of growing different crops in systematic strips across the slope of the land to control soil erosion.

Question 20

In the practical guide for establishing an intercropping system of maize and cowpea, what is the recommended spacing between planting rows?

Accepted Answer

The recommended spacing between planting rows for maize and cowpea in the intercropping system is 75 centimeters.
