Basketball Skills, Rules, Officials and Safety for Primary 4

Performance Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. perform basic skills and techniques of basketball.

Meaning of Basketball

Basketball is a team sport played by two teams of five players each. The goal of the game is to score points by shooting a ball through a hoop, called a basket, which is elevated 10 feet (3.05 metres) off the ground.

The game is played on a rectangular court, and players move the ball by dribbling it (bouncing it while running) or passing it to teammates. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Basketball Skills and Techniques

Playing basketball involves several important skills and techniques. Practising these skills helps players improve their speed, agility, and endurance, which are important for many sports and daily activities.

1. Jump Ball

A jump ball is how a basketball game usually starts. It is also used to restart the game in certain situations.

To perform a jump ball:

  1. Two opposing players stand inside the centre circle, facing each other.
  2. The referee throws the ball straight up between them.
  3. Each player tries to tap the ball to a teammate before it touches the ground.
  4. Players must not touch the ball until it reaches its highest point.

2. Dribbling

Dribbling is the skill of bouncing the ball continuously with one hand while moving around the court. It allows a player to move with the ball.

To dribble the basketball:

  1. Stand with knees slightly bent and body leaning forward a little.
  2. Push the ball down towards the floor with your fingertips, not your palm.
  3. Keep the ball low, around waist height or lower, to protect it from opponents.
  4. Look up while dribbling, not at the ball, to see teammates and opponents.
  5. Use either hand to dribble, changing hands when needed.

3. Passing

Passing is throwing the ball to a teammate. Good passing helps the team move the ball quickly and create scoring chances.

Common types of passes include:

  1. Chest Pass:

    1. Hold the ball with both hands at chest level.
    2. Step forward and push the ball directly to your teammate’s chest.
    3. Extend your arms fully with thumbs pointing down.
  2. Bounce Pass:

    1. Hold the ball with both hands at chest or waist level.
    2. Step forward and push the ball towards the floor so it bounces once and reaches your teammate’s waist or chest.

4. Shooting

Shooting is the action of throwing the ball towards the basket to score points. The goal is to get the ball through the hoop.

To shoot the basketball:

  1. Hold the ball with your shooting hand under the ball and your other hand on the side for balance.
  2. Bend your knees and jump slightly, using the power from your legs.
  3. Extend your shooting arm towards the basket, flicking your wrist as the ball leaves your fingertips.
  4. Aim for the centre of the hoop.

5. Rebounding

Rebounding is the act of gaining possession of the ball after a missed shot. This can be either an offensive rebound (getting your own team’s missed shot) or a defensive rebound (getting the opponent’s missed shot).

To rebound the basketball:

  1. Position yourself close to the basket when a shot is taken.
  2. Watch the ball carefully to see where it might bounce off the rim or backboard.
  3. Jump high with both hands extended to catch the ball.
  4. Secure the ball firmly once caught.

6. Faking

Faking is a deceptive movement or action used to trick an opponent. It helps a player create space to shoot, pass, or dribble past a defender.

To perform a fake:

  1. Make a quick movement in one direction (e.g., a head fake, a shoulder fake, or a step in one direction).
  2. Immediately change direction or perform the intended action (e.g., shoot, pass, or dribble) once the defender reacts to the fake.
  3. Keep your eyes on the defender to see how they react.

7. Dunking and Slamming

Dunking and slamming are ways of scoring points by forcing the ball directly down through the basket from above. For Primary 4 learners, this skill focuses on jumping high and reaching the basket to place the ball in, often with a lowered hoop for safety and practice.

To perform a dunk or slam safely:

  1. Dribble the ball towards the basket with speed.
  2. Jump high towards the hoop, holding the ball firmly with one or both hands.
  3. Push the ball down through the hoop.
  4. Land safely on both feet after the jump.
  5. Always ensure the hoop is at a safe height for your age and ability when practising this skill.

Developing Basketball Skills

Regular practice is important for developing basketball skills. The more a player practises dribbling, passing, shooting, and other techniques, the better they become.

Practising these skills also helps to improve important physical abilities:

  1. Speed: Dribbling and running on the court helps players move faster.
  2. Agility: Quick changes in direction while dribbling or faking improve agility.
  3. Endurance: Playing a full game of basketball requires running and jumping for a long time, which builds endurance.

Safety in Basketball

Playing basketball is fun, but it is important to play safely to avoid injuries.

Important safety tips include:

  1. Always wear appropriate sports attire, including comfortable clothes and sports shoes.
  2. Warm up before playing to prepare the body for activity.
  3. Cool down after playing to help the body recover.
  4. Ensure the basketball court is clean and free from obstacles.
  5. Check that the basketball hoop and stand are stable and safe.
  6. Listen to the coach or teacher’s instructions and follow the rules of the game.
  7. Avoid rough play that could harm other players.
  8. Drink water regularly to stay hydrated, especially during long play sessions.
