Meaning of Law
A law is a set of rules that tells people how to behave. Laws help to guide actions and keep order in a community or country.
In the Bible, God’s law refers to the rules and commands that God gave to His people. These rules show people how to live in a way that pleases God and how to treat each other fairly.
Importance of Law
Laws are very important because they help to create a good and peaceful society. Without laws, there would be confusion, fighting, and disorder.
The importance of law includes:
- Maintaining Order: Laws help to keep things organised and prevent chaos.
- Ensuring Safety: Laws protect people from harm and make sure everyone is safe.
- Promoting Fairness: Laws ensure that everyone is treated equally and justly.
- Guiding Behaviour: Laws teach people what is right and wrong, helping them to make good choices.
- Building Peace: When people follow laws, there is less conflict and more peace in the community.
The Ten Commandments
God gave His special laws to Moses on Mount Sinai. These laws are called the Ten Commandments. They are found in the Bible in Exodus chapter 20 and Deuteronomy chapter 5.
The Ten Commandments are a summary of God’s will for His people. They teach how to love God and how to love other people.
The Ten Commandments are:
- You shall have no other gods before me.
- You shall not make for yourself an idol.
- You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.
- Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
- Honour your father and your mother.
- You shall not murder.
- You shall not commit adultery.
- You shall not steal.
- You shall not give false testimony against your neighbour.
- You shall not covet your neighbour’s house, wife, servants, animals, or anything else that belongs to your neighbour.

Purpose of God’s Law
The main purpose of God’s law is to regulate the relationship between God and His people. This means the law shows people how to have a good relationship with God and with each other.
The first four commandments teach people how to love and honour God. They explain that God is the only true God, and His name should be respected. They also remind people to set aside a special day to worship Him.
The last six commandments teach people how to treat others with love and respect. They cover how to honour parents, avoid harming others, be honest, and not desire what belongs to others. By following these laws, God’s people can live together in peace and show love to one another.
Reasons for Keeping God’s Law
Keeping God’s law brings many good things into the lives of those who obey. The Bible teaches that there are important reasons to follow God’s commands.
Reasons for keeping God’s law include:
- Long Life and Peace: Proverbs 3:1-2 says that keeping God’s commands will add many years to life and bring peace.
- Favour with God and People: Proverbs 3:3-4 teaches that if people are faithful and kind, they will find favour and a good name in the sight of God and people.
- Showing Love to God: Obeying God’s laws is a way to show love and respect for Him.
- Living a Righteous Life: God’s laws help people to live in a way that is good and pleasing to Him.
- Building a Strong Community: When everyone follows God’s laws, the community becomes stronger, safer, and more loving.
