Who is the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit is God. He is the third Person of the Trinity, along with God the Father and God the Son, Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit is a divine Helper and Guide. God sends the Holy Spirit to live in the hearts of people who believe in Jesus.
The Holy Spirit helps believers to understand God’s word and to live in a way that pleases God. He is always present to offer comfort, strength, and direction.
The Promise of the Holy Spirit
Before Jesus returned to heaven, He made a very important promise to His disciples. He assured them that He would not leave them alone after He left. Instead, He promised to send a special Helper, the Holy Spirit, to be with them always.
This promise is recorded in the Bible in John 15:26. Jesus said, “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.” This meant that the Holy Spirit would continue Jesus’ work on Earth by guiding and teaching His followers.
The Holy Spirit was promised to help believers understand God’s word and to live according to God’s will. This promise shows God’s great love for His children, ensuring they always have divine guidance and support.
The Gift of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is a wonderful gift from God to everyone who believes in Jesus Christ. This gift was given to empower believers and help them live a Christian life that honours God.
In Acts 1:8, Jesus told His disciples about this gift: “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” This power helps believers to share the good news of Jesus with others, even in difficult situations.
John 14:25 also speaks about the Holy Spirit as a teacher. Jesus said, “These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.” The Holy Spirit helps believers remember Jesus’ teachings and understand them better, making God’s word clear to them.
Receiving the Holy Spirit means having God’s presence and power living inside a person. This presence guides their thoughts, actions, and decisions, helping them to grow closer to God.
Things the Holy Spirit Does
Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would do many important things for His followers. These actions help believers to grow in their faith and live a life that pleases God.
The Holy Spirit performs several key roles in the lives of believers, including:
-
He Teaches All Things: In John 14:26, Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would teach believers all things and remind them of everything Jesus had said. This means the Holy Spirit helps people understand the Bible and remember God’s commands and truths.
-
He Reminds Believers: The Holy Spirit helps people remember the words and teachings of Jesus. When someone forgets what Jesus taught or needs guidance, the Holy Spirit brings it back to their mind, helping them to make good and godly choices.
-
He Convicts of Sin: John 16:8 explains that the Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment. This means the Holy Spirit helps people realise when they have done something wrong. He shows them their need for God’s forgiveness and encourages them to turn away from sin.
-
He Guides into All Truth: The Holy Spirit leads believers to understand God’s truth and helps them to avoid error and false teachings. He shows them the right path to follow in life, helping them to live according to God’s will.
-
He Helps to Live Righteously: The Holy Spirit helps believers to live a life that is pleasing to God. He gives them strength to do good actions, think good thoughts, and resist temptation.
It is important not to grieve the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 4:30 warns believers not to grieve the Holy Spirit of God by which they were sealed for the day of redemption. Grieving the Holy Spirit means doing things that displease God, such as lying, stealing, being unkind, or disobeying God’s commands. When people do these things, they make the Holy Spirit sad.
The Fruit of the Holy Spirit
When the Holy Spirit lives in a person’s heart, He helps them to show certain good qualities in their life. These qualities are called the fruit of the Holy Spirit. They are signs that the Holy Spirit is working in a person and changing them to be more like Jesus.
Galatians 5:22-23 lists these fruits:
- Love: This is a deep care and affection for God and for other people. It means wanting the best for others and showing kindness to everyone.
- Joy: This is a deep happiness that comes from God, even when things are difficult or sad. It is a lasting happiness that does not depend on circumstances.
- Peace: This is a calmness and quietness in the heart and mind, knowing that God is in control. It helps a person to be calm even in troubling times.
- Longsuffering (Patience): This means being able to wait calmly and endure difficulties, delays, or annoying situations without complaining or getting angry.
- Kindness: This is being friendly, generous, and considerate to others. It means being gentle and helpful in words and actions.
- Goodness: This means being morally upright and doing what is right and pure. It is about having a good character and doing good deeds.
- Faithfulness: This is being loyal and trustworthy to God and to others. It means keeping promises and being dependable.
- Gentleness: This is being mild, humble, and considerate in behaviour. It means treating others with respect and not being harsh or rough.
- Self-control: This is being able to manage one’s own desires, emotions, and actions. It means having power over what one says, thinks, and does.
These fruits are not things people can produce on their own strength. They are grown in a person’s life by the power of the Holy Spirit as they follow Jesus and allow the Spirit to guide them.
