Meaning, Nature and Importance of History for JSS 1

Performance Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. define the meaning of History;
  2. differentiate between History as a concept and a discipline;
  3. differentiate between History and storytelling;
  4. identify the Importance of the differences between History and Storytelling in decision-making.

What is History?

History is the study of past events, especially human affairs.

It involves looking back at what happened in the past, how it happened, and why it happened. History helps people understand how societies, cultures, and nations have changed over time. It is like looking through a window into the past to see the lives of people who lived before us.

History as a Concept

As a concept, History refers to all the events that have happened in the past.

These past events include everything from the creation of the world to the things that happened yesterday. It covers the lives of individuals, the growth of communities, the rise and fall of kingdoms, and major changes in the world. When people talk about “the past,” they are referring to History as a concept – the entire collection of events that are no longer happening.

History as a Discipline

As a discipline, History is the organised study and recording of past events.

This means that History is a subject taught in schools and universities. People who study History, called historians, use special methods to find out about the past. They collect information from different sources, such as old books, letters, pictures, and objects. They then analyse this information to understand what truly happened and present it in a clear and accurate way. This organised study helps to make sense of the past and learn from it.

Differentiating Between History and Storytelling

History and storytelling both involve narratives about events, but they are very different. The main difference lies in their basis: History is based on facts and evidence, while storytelling can be based on imagination and fiction.

History (Real-Life Experience)

History deals with real events that actually happened in the past.

It relies on evidence, such as written records, archaeological findings, oral traditions, and eyewitness accounts. Historians carefully check these sources to make sure the information is true and accurate. The goal of History is to present a factual account of the past, even if some parts are difficult or unpleasant. For example, the story of Nigeria’s independence in 1960 is a historical event because it is supported by official documents, speeches, and the memories of people who lived through it.

Storytelling (Fiction)

Storytelling, especially fiction, involves narratives that are made up or imagined.

While stories can be entertaining and teach lessons, they do not always need to be true. A storyteller can invent characters, events, and places. For example, a folktale about a talking tortoise or a magical forest is a work of fiction. Even if a story is inspired by real events, it often adds imaginary details to make it more interesting or to convey a particular message. The main purpose of storytelling is often to entertain, educate morally, or preserve cultural ideas, rather than to provide a strictly factual account.

Importance of the Differences in Decision-Making

Understanding the difference between History and storytelling is very important for making good decisions, both for individuals and for groups or communities.

  1. Learning from Real Experiences: History provides real examples of what happened when people made certain choices in the past. By studying these real experiences, individuals and groups can learn from past successes and mistakes. For instance, if a community wants to build a new market, they can look at the history of other markets in the area to see what worked well and what did not.
  2. Avoiding Past Mistakes: When decisions are based on accurate historical facts, people are less likely to repeat errors that caused problems before. If a group ignores the true history of a conflict, they might make decisions that lead to similar problems again.
  3. Building on True Foundations: Important decisions, like those about government policies, community projects, or personal career paths, need to be built on solid, factual information. Relying on made-up stories or false information can lead to poor outcomes and wasted efforts.
  4. Informing Future Actions: History helps people understand the causes and effects of past events. This understanding allows individuals and groups to predict possible outcomes of their decisions and plan more effectively for the future. For example, understanding the history of farming practices in a region can help farmers make better decisions about what crops to plant.
  5. Promoting Critical Thinking: Differentiating between History and storytelling encourages people to think critically about information. It teaches them to ask questions like: “Is this information true?” “What is the evidence?” “Who is telling this story and why?” This skill is vital for making informed decisions in all aspects of life.

Describing Historical Events

Describing historical events means explaining what happened in the past using clear, factual language.

When describing a historical event, it is important to include key details such as:

  1. What happened: Clearly state the event.
  2. When it happened: Provide the date or period.
  3. Where it happened: Mention the location.
  4. Who was involved: Name the people or groups.
  5. Why it happened: Explain the causes or reasons.
  6. What were the results: Describe the effects or consequences.

For example, to describe Nigeria’s independence:

Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule on 1st October 1960, at Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos. This event involved Nigerian leaders like Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and Nnamdi Azikiwe, as well as British officials. It happened because Nigerian nationalists had campaigned for self-rule for many years. The result was that Nigeria became a sovereign nation, able to govern itself and make its own decisions.
