Classification of Feed Ingredients
Performance Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- identify various feed ingredients;
- classify various feed ingredients;
- categorise feed ingredients as major or minor.
Poultry farming is an important part of agriculture in Nigeria. For poultry birds like chickens, turkeys, and ducks to grow well and produce eggs, they need proper food. This food is called poultry feed. Poultry feed is made from different materials mixed together. These materials are known as feed ingredients.
Feed ingredients are the raw materials used to prepare food for poultry birds. Each ingredient provides specific nutrients that the birds need for different body functions, such as growth, energy, and egg production.
Identifying Common Feed Ingredients
Many different ingredients are used to make poultry feed. These ingredients come from plants and animals. Knowing these ingredients helps farmers understand what their birds are eating and why.
Common feed ingredients include:
- Maize: This is a yellow grain, widely used as a primary source of energy in poultry feed.
- Sorghum: A reddish-brown grain, similar to maize, also provides energy.
- Millet: Small grains that are another good source of energy for poultry.
- Groundnut cake: This is what remains after oil has been extracted from groundnuts. It is rich in protein.
- Soybean meal: Similar to groundnut cake, this is the product left after oil is removed from soybeans. It is an excellent source of protein.
- Blood meal: This ingredient is made from dried animal blood. It is a very high source of protein.
- Fish meal: Made from dried and ground fish, fish meal is another excellent source of protein.
- Wheat: A common grain that provides energy to poultry.
Classifying Feed Ingredients by Nutrient Group
Feed ingredients can be grouped based on the main nutrients they provide to poultry. For JSS1, we will focus on two important nutrient groups: energy sources and protein sources.
Energy Sources
Energy source ingredients provide the birds with the power they need to move, stay warm, grow, and produce eggs. Without enough energy, birds become weak and do not grow well.
Examples of energy source ingredients include:
- Maize
- Sorghum
- Millet
- Wheat
Protein Sources
Protein source ingredients are essential for building and repairing the bird’s body. They help in the growth of muscles, feathers, and internal organs. Protein is also crucial for egg production in laying hens.
Examples of protein source ingredients include:
- Soybean meal
- Groundnut cake
- Blood meal
- Fish meal
Categorising Feed Ingredients as Major or Minor
Feed ingredients are also categorised based on the quantity in which they are used in poultry feed. This helps in understanding their importance and how much of each is needed.
Major Ingredients
Major ingredients are those that make up a large part of the poultry feed mixture. They form the bulk of the feed and provide most of the energy and protein needed by the birds.
Examples of major ingredients include:
- Maize
- Sorghum
- Millet
- Soybean meal
- Groundnut cake
Minor Ingredients
Minor ingredients are used in very small amounts in poultry feed. Even though they are used in small quantities, they are very important for the overall health, growth, and productivity of the birds. They provide essential vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that the major ingredients might not supply enough of.
Examples of minor ingredients include:
- Lysine: An important amino acid that helps birds grow well.
- Methionine: Another essential amino acid, important for feather development and overall health.
- Vitamin premix: A mixture of different vitamins that birds need for various body functions, such as strong bones and good immunity.
