Performance Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Identify common products (goods) from poultry, rabbits, sheep, and goats.
  2. State the uses of products obtained from these animals.
  3. List simple ways to prepare these products for sale.
  4. Mention places where these products can be sold.
  5. Explain the meaning of marketing in livestock farming.

Introduction to Marketing Livestock Products

Livestock farming involves raising animals like poultry, rabbits, sheep, and goats. These animals provide many useful products that people need every day. For farmers to earn money and for people to get these products, they need to be sold. The process of making these products available and selling them to people is called marketing.

What is Marketing?

Marketing is the process of making products or services available to customers and convincing them to buy.

In livestock farming, marketing means taking the products from your animals, preparing them, and selling them to people who need them. This helps farmers get income and provides food and other useful items to the community.

Goods and Services from Livestock

When we talk about products from animals, we usually mean “goods” and “services.”

What are Goods?

Goods are physical items that can be seen, touched, and bought, such as food, clothing, or tools.

In livestock farming, goods include things like meat, eggs, milk, wool, and animal skins.

What are Services?

Services are actions or activities performed for others, rather than physical items, such as teaching, transportation, or healthcare.

In livestock farming, a service could be selling young animals for breeding or rearing, or even providing advice on animal care.

Products from Poultry

Poultry refers to birds raised for meat and eggs. Common poultry animals include chickens, ducks, turkeys, and guinea fowl.

The main goods obtained from poultry are:

  1. Eggs: These are a common source of protein and are eaten in many ways.
  2. Meat: Poultry meat is a popular food item, enjoyed by many people.

A service from poultry farming could be selling day-old chicks or young birds to other farmers who want to raise them.

Products from Rabbits

Rabbits are small mammals raised for their meat and sometimes their fur. They grow quickly and can be a good source of protein.

The main good obtained from rabbits is:

  1. Meat: Rabbit meat is lean and nutritious.

A service from rabbit farming could be selling young rabbits (kits) to other farmers or individuals who want to start their own rabbit farm or keep them as pets.

Products from Sheep

Sheep are farm animals raised for their meat, wool, and milk. They are common in many parts of Nigeria.

The main goods obtained from sheep are:

  1. Meat (Mutton/Lamb): Sheep meat is a popular food, especially during festive periods.
  2. Wool: This is the soft, thick hair of sheep, used to make clothing and blankets.
  3. Skin/Hide: Sheepskin can be processed into leather for various products.
  4. Milk: Some breeds of sheep produce milk, which can be used to make cheese and other dairy products.

A service from sheep farming could be selling lambs or adult sheep for breeding purposes to other farmers.

Products from Goats

Goats are hardy animals raised for their meat, milk, and skin. They are very common in Nigerian households and farms.

The main goods obtained from goats are:

  1. Meat (Chevon): Goat meat is widely consumed and is a significant source of protein.
  2. Milk: Goat milk is nutritious and can be consumed fresh or used to make cheese and other dairy products.
  3. Skin/Hide: Goatskin is valuable for making leather products like shoes, bags, and drums.

A service from goat farming could be selling young goats (kids) or adult goats for breeding to other farmers.

Preparing Livestock Products for Sale

For livestock products to be attractive to buyers and safe to consume, they need to be prepared properly. Simple preparation methods include:

  1. Cleaning Eggs: Fresh eggs should be gently cleaned to remove any dirt or feathers. They can then be packed carefully in trays or cartons to prevent breakage.
  2. Dressing Meat: When an animal is slaughtered for meat, it needs to be “dressed.” This means removing the skin, internal organs, and cleaning the carcass properly. The meat can then be cut into smaller, manageable pieces.
  3. Washing Wool: If wool is to be sold, it should be washed to remove dirt and grease, making it cleaner and more appealing.
  4. Curing Skins: Animal skins need to be treated (cured) to prevent them from rotting. This often involves salting and drying them so they can be preserved until they are processed into leather.
  5. Packaging Milk: Fresh milk should be collected hygienically and stored in clean, sealed containers or bottles to keep it fresh and safe for consumption.

Places to Sell Livestock Products

Farmers can sell their livestock products in different places. Choosing the right place helps them reach more buyers and get good prices. Common places to sell include:

  1. Local Markets: These are common places where farmers take their products to sell directly to consumers or small retailers.
  2. Homes and Neighbourhoods: Farmers can sell directly from their farms or homes to people in their community. This is often done for fresh eggs, milk, or dressed meat.
  3. Restaurants and Hotels: Many restaurants and hotels need a regular supply of meat, eggs, and sometimes milk. Farmers can sell their products directly to these businesses.
  4. Butcher Shops: Farmers can sell live animals or dressed carcasses to butcher shops, who then cut and sell the meat to customers.
  5. Specialised Shops: For products like wool or cured skins, farmers might sell to shops that specialise in these materials or to craftspeople who use them.
  6. Other Farmers: Live animals (like young birds, rabbits, sheep, or goats) are often sold to other farmers who want to expand their own livestock.

Importance of Marketing Livestock Products

Marketing livestock products is very important for several reasons:

  1. Income for Farmers: Selling products allows farmers to earn money, which they can use to buy food, pay for school fees, and invest more in their farms.
  2. Food for People: Marketing ensures that nutritious food like meat, eggs, and milk reaches families and communities, helping to feed the population.
  3. Meeting Demand: As populations grow, the demand for food and other animal products increases. Marketing helps to meet this demand.
  4. Economic Growth: A good marketing system helps the economy grow by creating jobs in farming, transportation, processing, and sales.
  5. Reduced Waste: Effective marketing helps farmers sell their products quickly, reducing the chances of spoilage and waste.
