Meaning, importance and scope of Agriculture

Performance Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. explain the meaning of Agriculture;
  2. describe the importance of Agriculture;
  3. identify the scope of Agriculture.

Meaning of Agriculture

Agriculture is the practice of farming, which includes growing crops and raising animals for food, raw materials and other human needs.

It is how people produce most of the food eaten every day, such as yam, rice, beans, fruits, vegetables, meat, and milk. Agriculture also provides materials for clothing, shelter, and other useful products.

Importance of Agriculture

Agriculture is very important to people and the country. It provides many things that are essential for daily life.

The importance of agriculture includes:

  1. Food Supply: Agriculture provides almost all the food people eat. This includes staple foods like cassava, maize, rice, and millet, as well as fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, and dairy products. Without agriculture, there would not be enough food to feed everyone.
  2. Raw Materials: Many industries depend on agriculture for their raw materials. For example, cotton from farms is used to make clothes, timber from trees is used for building and furniture, and rubber is used for tyres and other products.
  3. Employment: Agriculture provides jobs for many people, especially in rural areas. Farmers, farm workers, and people who process agricultural products all earn a living from agriculture.
  4. Income for Farmers: Farmers sell their crops and animals to earn money. This income helps them take care of their families and improve their lives.
  5. Foreign Exchange: When a country exports agricultural products to other countries, it earns foreign money. This money can be used to buy other important goods and services for the country.
  6. Development of Rural Areas: Agriculture helps rural communities to grow. It leads to the building of roads, markets, and other facilities that improve the lives of people living in these areas.

Scope of Agriculture

The scope of agriculture refers to the many different areas and activities involved in farming and related practices. It is a wide field that covers various ways of producing food and other useful products.

Animal Production

Animal production is the raising of animals for their meat, milk, eggs, wool, or other products. This involves caring for animals, feeding them, and ensuring they are healthy.

Examples of animal production include:

  1. Goat Farming: This involves raising goats for their meat, milk, and sometimes skin. Goats are common in many Nigerian communities.
  2. Bee Keeping: This is the practice of raising bees, usually in hives, to collect honey and beeswax.
  3. Rabbit Farming: This involves raising rabbits for their meat and sometimes their fur. Rabbits grow quickly and can be a good source of protein.
  4. Poultry: This refers to raising birds like chickens, turkeys, ducks, and geese for their meat and eggs. Poultry farming is very popular in Nigeria.

Agricultural Engineering

Agricultural engineering is the use of machines and technology in farming. It involves designing, building, and maintaining farm equipment and structures.

This area helps farmers use tractors, irrigation systems, and other tools to make farming easier and more efficient.

Fishery

Fishery is the practice of raising fish and other aquatic animals in ponds, rivers, or special tanks. It is also known as aquaculture.

Fishery provides fish for food and helps to meet the demand for seafood.

Soil Science

Soil science is the study of soil. It involves understanding what soil is made of, how it forms, and how it can be kept healthy for growing crops.

Soil scientists help farmers know which crops grow best in different types of soil and how to improve soil fertility.

Farm Protection

Farm protection involves all the methods used to keep crops and animals safe from pests, diseases, and weeds. It also includes protecting farms from theft or damage.

This area ensures that farmers can harvest healthy crops and raise healthy animals without losing them to harmful elements.

Crop Production

Crop production is the growing of plants for food, feed, fibre, and other uses. This is a major part of agriculture and involves preparing the land, planting seeds, caring for the plants, and harvesting them.

Examples of crops grown in Nigeria include cassava, maize, yam, rice, beans, and groundnuts.

Horticulture (Flowers and Vegetables)

Horticulture is a special branch of agriculture that focuses on growing fruits, vegetables, flowers, and ornamental plants. It involves careful cultivation and management of these plants.

This area provides fresh vegetables and fruits for healthy eating, and beautiful flowers for decoration and special occasions.
