Home Economics Tools and Equipment

Performance Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. identify tools and equipment used in Home Economics
  2. discuss the uses of each Home Economics tool and equipment.

What Are Home Economics Tools and Equipment?

Home Economics is a subject that teaches about managing the home and family life. This includes activities like cooking, sewing, cleaning, and caring for clothes.

Home Economics tools and equipment are the different items and machines that help people perform these tasks easily and effectively in the home.

These tools make daily chores simpler and help to achieve good results in various household activities.

Sewing Tools

Sewing is the craft of fastening or attaching objects using stitches made with a needle and thread. It is used to make or repair clothes and other fabric items.

Tools used for sewing help to cut fabric, join pieces together, and finish edges neatly.

Common sewing tools include:

  1. Sewing machine: This is a machine used to stitch fabric and other materials together with thread. It makes sewing faster and stronger than hand sewing.
  2. Thread: This is a long, thin strand of fibre used to sew fabric together. It comes in many colours and types.
  3. Needle: This is a small, thin piece of metal with a sharp point at one end and a hole (eye) at the other. Thread passes through the eye, and the needle is used to push the thread through fabric to create stitches.

Knitting Tools

Knitting is a method of creating fabric by interlocking loops of yarn with needles. It is often used to make sweaters, scarves, and blankets.

Tools for knitting help to hold the loops of yarn and create new stitches.

Common knitting tools include:

  1. Knitting pin and needle: These are long, slender tools, usually made of metal, plastic, or wood, used to hold stitches and create new ones. They come in pairs and have different sizes.
  2. Knitting machine: This is a machine that automates the knitting process, allowing for faster production of knitted fabrics compared to hand knitting.

Crocheting Tools

Crocheting is a method of creating fabric by interlocking loops of yarn with a hook. It is similar to knitting but uses a single hook instead of two needles.

The main tool for crocheting is the crocheting needle.

The common crocheting tool is:

  1. Crocheting needle: This is a hook-shaped tool used to pull loops of yarn through other loops to create stitches and form fabric. It comes in various sizes.

Cooking Tools

Cooking involves preparing food using heat. It is an important part of Home Economics, ensuring that families have nutritious and tasty meals.

Cooking tools are used for preparing, heating, and serving food.

Common cooking tools include:

  1. Pots: These are deep, round containers, usually with handles and a lid, used for boiling, stewing, and cooking soups or sauces on a stove.
  2. Frying pan: This is a shallow, flat-bottomed pan with a long handle, used for frying, searing, and browning foods.
  3. Knife: This is a sharp tool with a blade and a handle, used for cutting, slicing, chopping, and dicing food ingredients.
  4. Spoon: This is a utensil with a small, shallow bowl at the end of a handle, used for stirring, serving, and eating food.

Laundry Tools

Laundry refers to the washing, drying, and ironing of clothes and other textiles. It helps to keep clothes clean and neat.

Laundry tools are used to clean, dry, and press clothes.

Common laundry tools include:

  1. Iron: This is an electrical appliance with a flat, heated surface, used to press wrinkles out of clothes and make them smooth.
  2. Ironing board: This is a long, flat, padded surface, usually foldable, on which clothes are placed for ironing.
  3. Sleeve board: This is a small, narrow ironing board designed specifically for ironing sleeves and other small, difficult-to-reach areas of clothing.
  4. Blanket: While not a tool in the same way as an iron, a clean, thick blanket can be used as a makeshift ironing surface if an ironing board is not available. It provides a padded surface to protect the table underneath and help with pressing.

Safe Handling of Home Economics Tools

Using Home Economics tools correctly and safely is very important. Some tools, like knives and irons, can be dangerous if not handled with care.

Important safety tips include:

  1. Sharp tools like knives should be used carefully and kept away from young children.
  2. Electrical appliances like irons should be used under adult supervision and unplugged when not in use.
  3. Always keep tools clean and store them properly after use to prevent accidents and keep them in good condition.
