  3. explain the functions of battery in solar PV system.

Meaning of Solar Batteries

A solar battery is a special type of battery designed to store electrical energy generated by solar panels.

Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity. This electricity can be used immediately or stored for later use. Solar batteries are essential for keeping this stored electricity safe and ready for when it is needed, especially when the sun is not shining.

Functions of Batteries in a Solar PV System

Solar PV (Photovoltaic) systems use sunlight to produce electricity. However, the sun does not shine all the time. It sets at night, and clouds can block it during the day. This is where batteries become very important.

The main functions of a battery in a solar PV system include:

  1. Energy Storage: Solar batteries store the excess electricity produced by solar panels during sunny periods. This stored energy can then be used when the solar panels are not producing enough electricity, such as at night or on cloudy days.
  2. Continuous Power Supply: By storing energy, batteries ensure that homes, schools, or businesses have a continuous supply of electricity, even when the solar panels are not active. This prevents power interruptions.
  3. Stabilising Power: Batteries help to provide a steady and stable flow of electricity. Solar panel output can vary with sunlight intensity, but batteries can smooth out these changes, delivering consistent power to appliances.
  4. Backup Power: In areas where the main electricity grid is unreliable, solar batteries provide a reliable backup power source. If the grid power goes off, the stored solar energy in the batteries can power essential appliances.

Observe the diagram below, which shows how batteries fit into a solar PV system.

Types of Solar Batteries

Different types of batteries are used in solar PV systems, each with its own characteristics. The choice of battery depends on factors like cost, lifespan, and how much power is needed. The main types of solar batteries include:

  1. Deep Cycle Batteries
  2. Shallow Cycle Batteries
  3. Lead-Acid Batteries
  4. Lithium-Ion Batteries

Deep Cycle Batteries

Deep cycle batteries are specifically designed to be discharged deeply (meaning a large portion of their stored energy can be used) and recharged many times without being damaged. They are built to provide a steady amount of power over a long period.

These batteries are ideal for solar PV systems because solar systems often require batteries to release a lot of their stored energy daily and then recharge. They are durable and can withstand the regular cycling of charging and discharging.

Shallow Cycle Batteries

Shallow cycle batteries are designed for applications where they are only discharged a small amount before being recharged. They are meant to provide quick bursts of high power rather than a continuous, deep discharge.

These batteries are generally not suitable for most solar PV systems that require regular deep discharge. Using a shallow cycle battery in a deep cycle application can significantly shorten its lifespan.

Lead-Acid Batteries

Lead-acid batteries are one of the oldest and most common types of batteries used in solar PV systems. They are known for being affordable and reliable.

These batteries are heavy and contain a liquid electrolyte (acid). They often require some maintenance, such as checking and refilling the electrolyte levels. They are available in both deep cycle and shallow cycle versions, but deep cycle lead-acid batteries are preferred for solar applications.

Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries are a more modern type of battery that has become popular in solar PV systems. They are lighter and more compact than lead-acid batteries.

These batteries can store more energy for their size and typically have a longer lifespan than lead-acid batteries. They also require less maintenance. However, lithium-ion batteries are generally more expensive than lead-acid batteries.

The image below shows examples of different types of solar batteries.
