By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. enumerate the characteristics of good and bad leadership;
  2. outline the benefits of good leadership;
  3. demonstrate the qualities of good leadership in group activities;
  4. explain the consequences of bad leadership.

Meaning of Leadership

Leadership is the act of guiding a group of people or an organisation towards a common goal. A leader is a person who shows the way and influences others to work together.

Leaders are found in many places. In the home, parents are leaders. In the school, the head teacher, class captains and prefects are leaders. In the community, traditional rulers, religious leaders and elected officials are leaders.

Characteristics of Good Leadership

Good leadership helps a group or community to grow and succeed. A good leader has certain qualities that make others want to follow and cooperate.

The characteristics of good leadership include:

  1. Honesty: A good leader always tells the truth and keeps promises. People trust honest leaders.
  2. Fairness: A good leader treats everyone equally and does not show favouritism. Decisions are made without bias.
  3. Responsibility: A good leader takes charge and accepts blame when things go wrong. They ensure tasks are completed.
  4. Kindness: A good leader is caring and shows concern for the well-being of others. They help those in need.
  5. Good Listener: A good leader listens carefully to the ideas and concerns of others before making decisions.
  6. Setting a Good Example: A good leader behaves in a way that others can look up to and copy. They lead by example.
  7. Courage: A good leader is brave and makes difficult decisions for the good of the group, even when it is hard.
  8. Helpfulness: A good leader is always ready to assist members of the group to achieve their goals.

Characteristics of Bad Leadership

Bad leadership can cause problems and prevent a group or community from achieving its goals. A bad leader often has qualities that make people unhappy or unwilling to cooperate.

The characteristics of bad leadership include:

  1. Dishonesty: A bad leader tells lies and breaks promises. People lose trust in them.
  2. Unfairness: A bad leader treats some people better than others, showing favouritism or bias.
  3. Irresponsibility: A bad leader avoids duties and blames others when things go wrong.
  4. Selfishness: A bad leader thinks only about their own needs and benefits, not the group’s.
  5. Not Listening: A bad leader ignores the ideas and feelings of others, making decisions alone.
  6. Setting a Bad Example: A bad leader behaves poorly, encouraging others to do the same.
  7. Bullying: A bad leader uses fear or force to make people obey, rather than guiding them.
  8. Laziness: A bad leader avoids work and does not ensure that tasks are completed.

Benefits of Good Leadership

When a group or community has good leaders, many positive things happen. These positive outcomes are called benefits.

The benefits of good leadership include:

  1. Peace and Harmony: Good leaders help people live together without fighting or arguments. Everyone feels safe and respected.
  2. Progress and Development: Good leaders encourage new ideas and hard work, which helps the group or community to improve and grow.
  3. Happiness and Satisfaction: When things are well-organised and fair, people are generally happier and more content with their lives.
  4. Teamwork and Cooperation: Good leaders inspire people to work together, share ideas, and help each other achieve common goals.
  5. Order and Discipline: Good leaders set clear rules and ensure everyone follows them, leading to an organised and well-behaved group.
  6. Good Results: With clear guidance and cooperation, groups led by good leaders often achieve their goals successfully.

Consequences of Bad Leadership

Bad leadership can lead to many negative outcomes for a group or community. These negative outcomes are called consequences.

The consequences of bad leadership include:

  1. Disunity and Conflict: Bad leaders can cause people to fight, argue, and not get along. This breaks the group apart.
  2. Lack of Progress: When leaders are irresponsible or selfish, the group or community does not move forward or improve.
  3. Unhappiness and Frustration: People become sad, angry, and frustrated when their leaders are unfair or do not listen.
  4. Poor Teamwork: Bad leaders make it difficult for people to work together, leading to a lack of cooperation and trust.
  5. Disorder and Chaos: Without clear rules or fair enforcement, a group can become disorganised and messy.
  6. Failure to Achieve Goals: Groups with bad leaders often fail to complete tasks or reach their objectives.
  7. Danger and Insecurity: Irresponsible leaders may not protect the group, leading to unsafe situations.

Demonstrating Qualities of Good Leadership in Group Activities

It is important to not only know about good leadership but also to practise it. You can show good leadership qualities in your daily activities, especially when working in groups with your classmates.

The procedure for demonstrating good leadership in group activities involves the following steps:

  1. Listen to Others: When your group is discussing a task, pay attention to what every member says. Do not interrupt.
  2. Share Ideas Fairly: Encourage everyone to share their thoughts. If you have an idea, present it calmly and allow others to comment.
  3. Help Classmates: If a group member is struggling with a part of the task, offer to help them understand or complete it.
  4. Take Responsibility: If your group makes a mistake, do not blame one person. Accept that it is a group effort and work together to fix it.
  5. Be Fair in Decisions: When the group needs to decide something, make sure the decision is fair to everyone and benefits the whole group, not just a few people.
  6. Encourage Teamwork: Remind your group members to work together and support each other. Celebrate small successes as a team.
  7. Set a Good Example: Always be punctual, complete your part of the work well, and be polite to everyone in your group.
  8. Resolve Conflicts Peacefully: If there is a disagreement, help your group members talk it out calmly and find a solution that everyone can agree on.
