Performance Objectives

- mention and be familiar with emergency phone numbers.
What Are Emergency Phone Numbers?
Emergency phone numbers are special telephone numbers that people can call when they need urgent help. These numbers connect callers to services that can provide quick assistance in dangerous or difficult situations.
Knowing these numbers and when to use them is a very important life skill. It helps people get help quickly during accidents, fires, crimes, or health problems.
General Emergency Number in Nigeria
In Nigeria, the number 112 is a common general emergency number. When someone calls 112, they can be connected to different emergency services like the Police, Fire Service, or Ambulance, depending on the type of help needed.
It is important to know this number and also to be familiar with other specific emergency services and when to call them.
Different Emergency Services and Their Uses
Different types of emergencies require different kinds of help. Here are some important emergency services and when to call them:
Police
The Police help to keep people safe, prevent crime, and maintain law and order in the community. They investigate crimes and protect citizens.
Call the Police emergency number if:
- There is a crime happening, like a robbery or a fight.
- Someone is in danger or has been hurt by another person.
- There is a serious accident and someone needs help.
- You see something suspicious that could be dangerous.
Fire Service
The Fire Service helps to put out fires and rescue people from burning buildings or other dangerous situations. They also respond to other emergencies like road accidents where people might be trapped.
Call the Fire Service emergency number if:
- You see a fire, whether it is in a house, a bush, or a vehicle.
- Someone is trapped in a burning building.
- There is a gas leak that could cause an explosion.
- There is a serious accident and people need to be rescued from a vehicle.

Call the FRSC emergency number if:
- You witness a road accident.
- There is a broken-down vehicle causing a serious obstruction on the road.
- You need help with a road safety issue.
National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA)
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) helps people during large-scale disasters like floods, building collapses, or other major emergencies that affect many people. They provide relief and support to affected communities.

- There is a major natural disaster like a flood or earthquake.
- A building has collapsed.
- Many people are affected by a large emergency and need help, shelter, or food.
Hospitals

Call NAFDAC’s emergency number if:
- You find fake or expired food products.

How to Make an Emergency Call
Making an emergency call correctly can save lives. The procedure involves the following steps:
- Stay Calm: Try to remain calm and speak clearly.
- Dial the Number: Dial the emergency number (like 112 or the specific number for the service needed).
- State Your Emergency: Clearly tell the operator what the emergency is (e.g., “There’s a fire,” “Someone is hurt,” “A crime is happening”).
- Give Your Location: Tell the operator your exact location, including the street name, house number, and any nearby landmarks.
- Provide Details: Answer any questions the operator asks. Describe what happened, who is involved, and if anyone is injured.
- Do Not Hang Up: Do not hang up until the operator tells you to. They might need more information or give you instructions.
Important Things to Remember About Emergency Calls
Emergency phone numbers are for real emergencies only. It is very important to use them responsibly.
- Do Not Make Prank Calls: Never call emergency numbers as a joke or to play pranks. This wastes the time of emergency workers and can prevent them from helping people who are in real danger.
- Know Your Location: Always try to know your exact location, especially when you are outside your home. This helps emergency services find you quickly.
- Listen Carefully: When you call an emergency number, listen carefully to the operator’s instructions and follow them.
- Ask an Adult: If an adult is nearby, ask them for help in making the call, especially if you are very scared or unsure.
