Pathogens, diseases and prevention.
Performance Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- identify diseases caused by pathogens;
- explain disease preventive measures.
Introduction to Diseases and Prevention
The human body is designed to be strong and healthy. However, sometimes people fall sick. Sickness can make a person feel weak, tired, or unable to carry out daily activities like going to school or playing. Some sicknesses are caused by tiny living things that are too small to be seen with the naked eye.
Understanding what causes these sicknesses and how to prevent them is very important for staying healthy and strong.
What Are Pathogens?
Pathogens are tiny living things, also called germs, that can cause diseases in humans, animals, and plants.
These germs are so small that they can only be seen using a special microscope. They can be found everywhere around us: in the air, water, soil, and on surfaces. When pathogens enter the body, they can multiply and cause illness.
Diseases Caused by Pathogens
Diseases caused by pathogens are often called infectious diseases because they can spread from one person to another, or from animals to humans, or through contaminated food and water. Identifying these diseases helps people understand how to protect themselves and others.
Common diseases caused by pathogens include:
- Malaria: This disease is caused by a tiny parasite called Plasmodium, which is carried by mosquitoes. Symptoms include fever, headache, and body aches.
- Typhoid Fever: Caused by bacteria called Salmonella Typhi, this disease spreads through contaminated food and water. Symptoms include high fever, stomach pain, and weakness.
- Cholera: This is a severe diarrhoeal disease caused by bacteria called Vibrio cholerae, usually spread through contaminated water or food. It causes severe dehydration.
- Measles: A highly contagious viral disease that causes a rash, fever, and cough. It spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
- Common Cold: This is a mild viral infection of the nose and throat. It spreads easily from person to person through airborne droplets or direct contact.
- Tuberculosis (TB): Caused by bacteria, TB mainly affects the lungs and can spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
- Ringworm: A fungal infection of the skin that causes a circular rash. It can spread through direct contact with an infected person or animal, or contaminated objects.
Recognising the symptoms of these diseases and knowing how they spread is the first step in preventing them.
Disease Preventive Measures
Preventing diseases means taking steps to stop pathogens from entering the body or from spreading. Many simple actions can help keep people healthy and prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
Adequate Nutrition and Exercise
Eating a balanced diet with enough fruits, vegetables, and protein helps the body build a strong immune system. The immune system is the body’s natural defence against pathogens. Regular physical exercise also strengthens the body and helps it fight off infections more effectively.
Clean Environment
Keeping the surroundings clean is crucial for preventing diseases. Pathogens thrive in dirty places. Regular cleaning of homes, schools, and public areas helps to remove germs and reduce their spread. This includes sweeping, mopping, and dusting surfaces.
Use of Safe Water
Many diseases like cholera and typhoid are spread through unsafe water. It is important to always drink water that is clean and safe. This means drinking water from reliable sources, boiling water before drinking if its safety is uncertain, or using water filters.
Proper Disposal of Refuse and Sewage
Refuse (waste materials like garbage) and sewage (human waste) can contain many pathogens. If not disposed of properly, they can contaminate water sources, soil, and attract pests like flies and rats that spread diseases. Using covered dustbins, disposing of waste in designated areas, and ensuring proper toilet facilities are essential.
Seeking and Getting Treatment on Time
When a person feels sick, it is important to seek medical help from a doctor or health worker as soon as possible. Getting treatment early can prevent the disease from becoming more severe and can also stop it from spreading to others. Delaying treatment can make the illness worse and harder to cure.
Good Hygiene
Good personal hygiene is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of pathogens. This includes:
- Washing hands thoroughly with soap and clean water, especially after using the toilet, before eating, and after coughing or sneezing.
- Bathing regularly to keep the body clean.
- Covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, preferably with a tissue or the elbow, to prevent germs from spreading into the air.
- Keeping fingernails short and clean.
Immunization
Immunization is a process that makes a person immune or resistant to an infectious disease. This is often done through vaccination. It helps the body build its own defence against specific pathogens without having to get sick first.
Good Ventilation
Good ventilation means allowing fresh air to circulate in rooms and buildings. This helps to reduce the concentration of airborne pathogens, especially in crowded places. Opening windows and doors can improve air circulation and reduce the risk of diseases like the common cold and tuberculosis spreading.
Health Education
Learning about health and diseases is called health education. When people understand how diseases spread and how to prevent them, they are better equipped to make healthy choices. This includes knowing about nutrition, hygiene, and the importance of seeking medical care.
Vaccination
Vaccination is the act of introducing a vaccine into the body to produce protection from a specific disease. A vaccine contains a weakened or inactive form of a pathogen, which trains the immune system to fight the real pathogen if it ever enters the body. Vaccines are available for many diseases, including measles, polio, and tetanus.
