Performance Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. explain the meaning of recreation, leisure and dance;
  2. distinguish dance, leisure and recreation;
  3. explain the benefits recreation and dance.

Meaning of Recreation

Recreation refers to activities that people do for enjoyment, relaxation, and refreshment of the body and mind, usually during their free time.

These activities are often chosen voluntarily and help a person feel happy and energised after work, school, or other duties. Recreation helps people to relax and have fun.

Examples of recreational activities include:

  1. Playing football or other sports
  2. Swimming
  3. Reading books or comics
  4. Visiting friends or family
  5. Playing board games like Ludo or draughts
  6. Watching movies or plays
  7. Gardening

Meaning of Leisure

Leisure is the free time when a person is not working, studying, or performing essential daily duties.

It is the time available for a person to do whatever they choose, including recreational activities. Leisure is about the time itself, while recreation is about the activities done during that time.

Examples of leisure time include:

  1. Evenings after school or work
  2. Weekends (Saturdays and Sundays)
  3. School holidays
  4. Public holidays

Meaning of Dance

Dance is an activity that involves moving the body in a rhythmic way, usually to music.

It is a form of expression, exercise, and entertainment. Dance can be performed alone, with a partner, or in a group. It is often a recreational activity.

Examples of dance include:

  1. Traditional Nigerian dances (e.g., Atilogwu, Bata, Koroso)
  2. Modern dance styles (e.g., Hip-hop, Afrobeat dance)
  3. Social dances at parties or celebrations
  4. Ballet

Distinguishing Dance, Leisure and Recreation

While recreation, leisure, and dance are related, they have distinct meanings:

  1. Leisure: This refers to the time that is free from work, school, or other responsibilities. It is the available free period.

  2. Recreation: This refers to the activities done during leisure time for enjoyment, relaxation, and refreshment. It is what a person chooses to do with their free time.

  3. Dance: This is a specific type of activity that involves rhythmic body movement, usually to music. Dance can be a form of recreation, and it is performed during leisure time.

In summary, leisure is the free time, recreation is an activity done in that free time, and dance is one particular kind of recreational activity.

Benefits of Recreation and Dance

Engaging in recreation and dance activities offers many advantages for a person’s overall well-being. These benefits include:

  1. Refreshment of both body and mind: Recreational activities and dance help to reduce stress and tiredness. After a period of work or study, these activities can make the body feel strong again and the mind feel clear and focused.

  2. Creation of room for fun and enjoyment: Recreation and dance provide opportunities for people to laugh, play, and have a good time. This enjoyment is important for happiness and a positive outlook on life.

  3. Carry-over values of skills learned in physical education classes: Many skills learned in physical education, such as running, jumping, throwing, and coordination, can be used and improved during recreational sports and dance. This helps to keep the body active and healthy outside of formal lessons.

  4. Promotion of mental alertness, social and emotional stability:

    1. Mental Alertness: Activities like playing games or learning dance steps require concentration and quick thinking, which helps to keep the mind sharp and alert.
    2. Social Stability: Participating in group recreation or dance allows people to interact with others, make friends, and learn teamwork. This helps in building good relationships and a sense of belonging.
    3. Emotional Stability: Recreation and dance can help people manage their feelings. They provide a healthy way to express emotions, reduce anger or sadness, and feel happier and more balanced.

Identifying Leisure and Recreation Activities

Identifying leisure and recreation activities involves understanding their purpose and when they are performed.

To identify a leisure activity, consider if the activity is done during free time, when a person is not obligated to work or study. For example, playing a game on a Saturday afternoon is a leisure activity because Saturday afternoon is leisure time.

To identify a recreational activity, consider if the activity is done for enjoyment, relaxation, or fun. It should be something a person chooses to do, rather than something they are forced to do. For instance, playing football with friends after school is a recreational activity because it is done for enjoyment and during free time.

Dance is easily identified by its rhythmic body movements, often to music. If an activity involves these elements, it is a form of dance.
