Meaning of Health, Healthcare and Ways of Maintaining Good Health for JSS 1
Performance Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- explain the meaning of health;
- discuss the importance of health care;
- describe ways of maintaining good health care.
Meaning of Health
Health is a state where a person feels well in their body and mind, and can carry out daily activities without sickness or pain.
It means being strong, active, and free from diseases. A healthy person can play, learn, and work effectively. Health is not just about not being sick; it also includes feeling happy and getting along well with others.
Importance of Health Care
Health care refers to the services provided to keep people healthy, prevent sickness, and treat illnesses. It involves visiting doctors, nurses, and other health workers, as well as using medicines and health facilities. Good health care is very important for several reasons:
- Prevent Illness and Disease: Health care helps people avoid getting sick in the first place. Regular check-ups, vaccinations, and advice from health workers can stop many diseases from starting or spreading. For example, getting vaccinated protects against diseases like measles and polio.
- Manage Chronic Disease: Some diseases, like asthma or diabetes, are long-lasting. These are called chronic diseases. Health care helps people with chronic diseases manage their condition so they can live full and active lives. Doctors and nurses provide guidance on diet, medication, and lifestyle changes to control these illnesses.
- Extend Life Span: By preventing and treating diseases, health care helps people live longer and healthier lives. When illnesses are caught early and treated properly, serious complications can be avoided, allowing individuals to enjoy more years of life.
Ways of Maintaining Good Health
Maintaining good health means taking steps to keep your body and mind in a healthy state. This is something everyone can do daily. The main ways to maintain good health include:
- Good feeding
- Recreation
- Sufficient sleep
Good Feeding
Good feeding means eating a balanced diet that provides all the nutrients your body needs to grow, stay strong, and fight off sickness. A balanced diet includes different types of food in the right amounts.
Examples of good feeding practices are:
- Eating a variety of foods: Include foods from all food groups, such as carbohydrates (yam, rice, garri), proteins (beans, eggs, fish, meat), fruits (oranges, mangoes, bananas), and vegetables (ugu, spinach, okra).
- Drinking plenty of clean water: Water is essential for all body functions. Drink at least 6-8 glasses of water every day.
- Limiting sugary drinks and junk food: Foods like sweets, soft drinks, and fried snacks contain too much sugar and unhealthy fats, which can lead to health problems if eaten too often.
- Eating regular meals: Have breakfast, lunch, and dinner at appropriate times to keep your energy levels stable.
Recreation
Recreation refers to activities done for enjoyment, relaxation, and physical activity, usually during free time. It helps to reduce stress, improve mood, and keep the body active.
Examples of recreational activities include:
- Playing sports: Engaging in games like football, basketball, skipping, or running.
- Outdoor activities: Taking walks, cycling, or playing in a park.
- Hobbies: Reading books, drawing, singing, or playing musical instruments.
- Social activities: Spending time with family and friends in a fun way.
Regular recreation keeps your body fit, strengthens your muscles and bones, and helps you feel happy and energetic.
Sufficient Sleep
Sufficient sleep means getting enough hours of rest for your body and mind to recover and recharge. For JSS1 students, getting about 8 to 10 hours of sleep every night is important.
When you sleep, your body repairs itself, your brain processes information from the day, and your energy levels are restored. Not getting enough sleep can make you feel tired, unable to concentrate, and more likely to get sick.
To ensure sufficient sleep:
- Go to bed at a regular time each night.
- Make sure your sleeping area is dark, quiet, and comfortable.
- Avoid using electronic devices like phones or tablets just before bedtime.
How to Maintain Good Health
Maintaining good health is a skill that involves making healthy choices every day. By following simple steps, you can ensure your body and mind stay strong and active.
The procedure involves the following steps:
- Plan your meals: Think about what you will eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Ensure each meal includes a variety of foods like carbohydrates, proteins, fruits, and vegetables.
- Choose healthy snacks: Instead of sugary snacks, opt for fruits, nuts, or a small portion of healthy homemade food between meals.
- Stay hydrated: Carry a water bottle and drink water regularly throughout the day, especially during and after physical activities.
- Engage in physical activity: Dedicate time each day for play, sports, or other recreational activities. Aim for at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity most days of the week.
- Set a regular bedtime: Decide on a consistent time to go to bed and wake up, even on weekends. This helps your body establish a healthy sleep pattern.
- Create a relaxing bedtime routine: Before sleeping, avoid screens. Instead, read a book, listen to calm music, or take a warm bath to help your body relax.
- Practise good hygiene: Wash your hands regularly, especially before eating and after using the toilet. Bathe daily to keep your body clean.
- Visit a health centre when needed: If you feel unwell, inform an adult and visit a health centre for proper care.
