What is National Identity?

National identity is the feeling of belonging to a country. It means knowing that a person is a part of Nigeria and shares things with other Nigerians.

When people have a national identity, they feel proud of their country. They know they are Nigerians and belong to one big family.

What are National Symbols?

A national symbol is something special that represents a country. It is a sign or object that helps people remember their country and what it stands for.

National symbols help people to feel united and proud of their country. They are like special marks that show everyone belongs to the same nation.

Importance of National Identity and National Symbols

National identity and national symbols are very important for many reasons:

  1. They help people feel proud of Nigeria.
  2. They remind everyone that they are Nigerians and belong together.
  3. They encourage people to love and protect their country.
  4. They show other countries who Nigerians are.

National Symbols of Nigeria

Nigeria has several important national symbols. These symbols help all Nigerians feel connected and proud of their country.

The National Flag

The National Flag is a very important symbol of Nigeria. It has two colours: green and white.

The flag has three equal vertical stripes. The two outer stripes are green, and the middle stripe is white.

The green colour on the flag stands for Nigeria’s rich land and natural wealth. The white colour stands for peace and unity.

The National Flag is flown on important buildings and during national celebrations. When the flag is raised, people show respect by standing still.

The National Anthem

The National Anthem is a special song for Nigeria. It is sung to show love and respect for the country.

When the National Anthem is played or sung, all Nigerians stand at attention. This shows honour for Nigeria.

The National Anthem is sung during school assemblies, national events, and other important gatherings.

The National Pledge

The National Pledge is a set of words that Nigerians say to promise their loyalty and service to the country.

Like the National Anthem, the National Pledge is recited during school assemblies and national events. People stand at attention when reciting the pledge.

Saying the National Pledge reminds everyone to be faithful, loyal, and honest to Nigeria.

The Coat of Arms

The Coat of Arms is a special picture that represents Nigeria. It has many symbols that tell about the country.

The Coat of Arms shows two white horses, an eagle, a shield, and a green and white wreath. The shield has two white lines that form a letter ‘Y’, representing the River Niger and River Benue meeting.

The Coat of Arms is seen on government documents, official buildings, and currency. It is a symbol of Nigeria’s authority and identity.

Currency

Currency is the money used in a country. The Nigerian currency is called Naira and Kobo.

Naira notes and Kobo coins are used to buy things like food, clothes, and school supplies. They are a symbol of Nigeria’s economy and trade.

The currency has pictures of important Nigerian leaders and symbols, reminding people of Nigeria’s history and identity.
