Leadership at Home

Performance Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. describe who the leader is at home;
  2. describe the structure of leadership in the family;
  3. identify the responsibility of leaders at home.

What is Leadership at Home?

Leadership at home means guiding and taking care of everyone in the family. It is about making sure the family is happy, safe, and well-provided for. Leaders help to make important decisions and teach family members how to live together peacefully.

In most homes, the father and mother are the main leaders. They work together to lead the family.

Who Leads in the Family? (Structure of Leadership)

Every family has a way of organising who does what. This is called the structure of leadership. In a family, the father and mother are usually at the top of this structure. They are the main leaders.

Children are also an important part of the family. While they are not the main leaders, they have their own roles and responsibilities. Everyone in the family works together to make the home a good place.

Responsibilities of Leaders at Home

Leaders at home have many important jobs to do. These jobs help the family to live well and grow strong. The responsibilities of leaders include:

  1. Providing for the family: Fathers and mothers work hard to provide food, clothing, and a safe place to live for their children.
  2. Making rules: Leaders set rules to keep everyone safe and to help the family live together happily. For example, rules about bedtime or helping with chores.
  3. Teaching good manners: Parents teach their children how to be respectful, kind, and honest. They show children how to behave well at home and outside.
  4. Caring for children: Fathers and mothers take care of their children when they are sick, help them with schoolwork, and make sure they are loved.
  5. Making decisions: Leaders make important decisions for the family, such as where to live, which school children will attend, or how to solve problems.
  6. Keeping the home safe: They ensure the home environment is safe and free from danger for everyone.

Practising Leadership Responsibilities Through Role-Playing

Role-playing is a fun way to understand how leaders at home carry out their responsibilities. It helps children to act out different roles and see what it feels like to be a leader or a family member following rules.

The procedure for role-playing family leadership responsibilities involves the following steps:

  1. Choose roles: Decide who will be the father, the mother, and the children.
  2. Choose a situation: Pick a common family situation, such as making rules for playtime, helping with homework, or deciding what to eat for dinner.
  3. Act it out: Each person acts according to their chosen role. The “father” and “mother” can discuss and make decisions, while the “children” can listen and respond.
  4. Show responsibilities: The “leaders” should show how they provide care, make rules, or teach. The “children” should show how they follow rules or ask for help.
  5. Discuss: After role-playing, talk about what happened. Discuss how the leaders showed responsibility and how the family members worked together.
