What is a Community?
A community is a place where people live, work and play together. It is made up of homes, schools, markets and other places.
People in a community know each other and help one another. Your home, your street and your neighbourhood are all part of your community.
What is a Local Government Area (LGA)?
A Local Government Area, or LGA, is a larger area that includes many communities and villages. It is a part of a state in Nigeria.
The LGA has a main office where leaders work to help all the communities within it. It helps to provide services like roads, health centres and schools for everyone.
People in the Community
Many different groups of people live and work in a community. Each group helps the community in its own way.
Some groups of people found in a community include:
- Families: These are parents and children living together in homes.
- Neighbours: These are people who live close to each other on the same street or in the same area.
- Traders and Shopkeepers: These people sell food, clothes and other things in markets and shops.
- Farmers: These people grow food crops for the community.
- Teachers: These people teach children in schools.
- Community Leaders: These are elders or chiefs who guide the community and help solve problems.
Long ago, some people were the first to settle in a community. They are remembered as the founders or early settlers. Important leaders and elders also help to make the community a good place to live. Events like community festivals or important meetings bring people together and are remembered as special times.
Important Places in the Community
Every community has special places that are important to the people living there. These places serve different purposes.
Important places in a community include:
- School: This is where children go to learn and play.
- Market: This is where people buy and sell food, clothes and other goods.
- Place of Worship: This can be a church or a mosque where people go to pray.
- Health Centre or Clinic: This is where people go when they are sick to get help from doctors and nurses.
- Community Hall or Chief’s Palace: This is where community leaders meet and where important community events take place.
These places are remembered because they help people in their daily lives and bring the community together for important events.
People in the Local Government Area (LGA)
Just like in a community, many different groups of people live and work across the entire Local Government Area. These people contribute to the growth and well-being of the LGA.
Groups of people found in a Local Government Area include:
- Civil Servants: These people work in the LGA secretariat and other government offices.
- Business Owners: These people run different businesses like big shops, restaurants or small factories.
- Farmers and Fishermen: These people produce food for many communities in the LGA.
- Healthcare Workers: These are doctors, nurses and other staff who work in hospitals and health centres across the LGA.
- Security Personnel: These are police officers and other security agents who help keep people safe.
- Traditional Rulers: These are kings, chiefs or emirs who lead different communities within the LGA.
Important Places in the Local Government Area (LGA)
The Local Government Area also has many important places that serve all the communities within it. These places are often bigger or serve a wider area than those in a single community.
Important places in a Local Government Area include:
- LGA Secretariat: This is the main office where the Local Government Chairman and other officials work.
- General Hospital: This is a larger hospital that serves many communities and offers more medical services.
- Police Station: This is where police officers work to maintain law and order across the LGA.
- Post Office: This is where people send and receive letters and parcels.
- Major Markets: These are large markets where people from different communities come to buy and sell goods.
- Public Parks or Recreation Centres: These are places where people can relax and play.
Showing Tolerance for Others
Tolerance means accepting and respecting people who are different from you. People in a community and LGA come from different backgrounds, have different beliefs and speak different languages.
It is important to live peacefully with everyone, even if they are not exactly like you. Showing tolerance makes the community a happy and safe place for all.
Ways to show tolerance for others include:
- Playing Together: Play with all children, no matter where they come from or what language they speak.
- Sharing: Share your toys, food and ideas with others.
- Listening: Listen to what others have to say, even if you do not agree with them.
- Respecting Differences: Understand that people can have different ways of doing things, and that is okay.
- Being Kind: Always be kind and friendly to everyone you meet.
