What is a Traditional Ruler?

A traditional ruler is a leader in a community who inherited their position or was chosen by the elders according to the customs and traditions of the people.

These leaders are very important in their communities. They help to keep the culture and history of their people alive.

History of Traditional Rulers

Long ago, before Nigeria became one country, different communities had their own leaders. These leaders were called traditional rulers. They were in charge of their people and their land.

The position of a traditional ruler often passed from a father to his child, or they were chosen by wise elders in the community. They helped to make sure everyone lived together peacefully and followed the community’s rules.

Identifying Traditional Rulers

Traditional rulers are important people in their communities. They are often known by special titles, such as Oba, Emir, Eze, Igwe, or Sultan. They wear special clothes called regalia, which include crowns, beads, and staffs, to show their position.

When you see a traditional ruler, they often sit on a special chair called a throne. They are usually surrounded by their chiefs and elders.

Roles of a Traditional Ruler

Traditional rulers have many important jobs in their communities. They help their people in different ways.

The roles of a traditional ruler include:

  1. Keeping Peace: Traditional rulers help to settle disagreements between people in the community. They listen to problems and help find fair solutions so everyone can live in peace.
  2. Promoting Culture: They help to preserve the traditions, customs, and history of their people. They encourage people to celebrate cultural festivals and teach younger generations about their heritage.
  3. Representing the Community: Traditional rulers speak for their community to the government and other groups. They make sure the needs and concerns of their people are heard.
  4. Advising the Government: They give advice to the government on matters that affect their community. They share their wisdom and knowledge of the local people.
  5. Community Development: They encourage projects that help the community grow, like building schools, markets, or roads. They work to improve the lives of their people.

Respecting Traditional Rulers

It is important to show respect to traditional rulers because they are leaders and custodians of culture. Showing respect helps to maintain peace and order in the community.

Ways to respect traditional rulers include:

  1. Greeting Them Properly: When you see a traditional ruler, greet them in the traditional way of your community. This might involve bowing, kneeling, or using special words.
  2. Listening to Their Advice: Pay attention when they speak and follow their good advice.
  3. Obeying Community Rules: Respect the rules and customs that the traditional ruler and elders help to uphold in the community.
  4. Not Interrupting Them: Allow them to finish speaking before you talk.
  5. Dressing Respectfully: When attending events where a traditional ruler is present, dress neatly and respectfully.
