What is Security?

Security means feeling safe and protected from harm.

When you are secure, you do not feel afraid. You know that people and things around you are there to keep you safe.

What is a Secure Environment?

A secure environment is a place where people feel safe and protected from danger.

In a secure environment, children can play, learn, and grow without fear. Examples of secure environments include your home, your school, and safe playgrounds.

Sources of Danger and Insecurity

Danger means something that can hurt you or cause harm. Insecurity means not feeling safe or protected.

It is important to know about things that can cause danger and make an environment insecure. Knowing these things helps people stay safe.

Some common sources of danger and insecurity are:

  1. Road Accidents: These happen when vehicles like cars, motorcycles, or bicycles crash. Road accidents can cause serious injuries. It is important to be careful when walking near roads and to always cross the road safely with an adult.
  2. Fire Outbreak: Fire can burn things and hurt people. A fire outbreak is when a fire starts in a place and spreads quickly. Children should never play with matches, lighters, or gas cookers.
  3. Relationships with Strangers: A stranger is someone you do not know. It is dangerous to talk to strangers, take things from them, or go anywhere with them without your parents’ permission.
  4. Kidnapping: This is when a bad person takes someone away without permission, often to hurt them or ask for money. This is why it is very important not to go with strangers.
  5. Drug Abuse: Drugs are medicines or other substances. Drug abuse is when people take drugs that are not prescribed by a doctor or take too much of a drug. This can harm their bodies and minds. Children should only take medicine given by their parents or a doctor.
  6. Terrorism: This is when bad people use violence to scare many people. They cause harm and make people feel unsafe. If you see something strange or someone acting suspiciously, tell an adult immediately.

Importance of a Secure Environment

Having a secure environment is very important for everyone. When an environment is secure:

  1. People feel happy and peaceful.
  2. Children can play and learn without fear.
  3. People can work and live without worrying about danger.
  4. It helps everyone to be healthy and grow well.

Who to Call During an Emergency

An emergency is a serious situation that happens suddenly and needs quick help. When you are in danger or see an emergency, it is important to know who to call for help.

The people you should call or tell during an emergency include:

  1. Parents: Your parents or guardians are the first people to call. They care for you and will help you.
  2. Teachers: If you are at school, your teacher is the best person to tell about any danger or emergency.
  3. Police: The police help to keep people safe and catch bad people. If there is a crime or serious danger, the police can help. In Nigeria, you can call the police emergency number.
  4. Fire Service: The Fire Service helps to put out fires and rescue people from burning buildings. If you see a fire, tell an adult to call the Fire Service.

It is important to know your parents’ phone numbers and how to reach your teachers or other trusted adults quickly.
