Prospective 2027 WASSCE candidates have a new registration requirement to prepare for: a valid National Identification Number. A circular dated September 29 from the West African Examinations Council’s Ikeja Zonal Office says WAEC NIN 2027 will be compulsory for candidates registering for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination for School Candidates.
The notice, addressed to school principals, says the decision followed a resolution of WAEC’s National Staff Examinations Committee. Under the directive, every prospective school candidate will be expected to provide a valid NIN before registration can be completed. Schools were asked to tell candidates to obtain their NIN ahead of the exercise so registration is not delayed.

Why Candidates Should Not Wait Until Registration Week
For current SS3 students, the biggest risk is leaving NIN enrolment or correction until schools begin capturing WASSCE entries. A candidate whose NIN has not been issued, whose name is misspelt or whose personal details conflict with school records could face unnecessary delays at the point when schools are trying to complete large numbers of registrations.
Candidates should therefore check the spelling and order of their names, date of birth and other basic identity details early. Where corrections are genuinely required, they should be handled through authorised identity-management channels rather than through unofficial agents. Students should also keep their NIN details private and provide them only through their school’s authorised registration process or official WAEC procedures.
The new rule does not mean students should rush to random websites claiming that 2027 WAEC registration is already open. The circular establishes the NIN requirement, but candidates should still wait for their schools and WAEC to communicate the formal registration timetable, fees and entry instructions. WASSCE for School Candidates is ordinarily processed by schools; students do not independently buy a school-candidate form from social-media vendors.
WAEC 2027 Is Also Arriving During a Bigger Subject Transition
The identity requirement comes as WASSCE is moving through another major transition. WAEC has already clarified that candidates in 2026 and 2027 will sit English Language and General Mathematics as the two examinable core subjects, while Citizenship and Heritage Studies Education and Digital Technologies are not scheduled to become examinable until 2028. Candidates therefore need to pay attention to both identity documentation and the subject combination selected by their schools.
Parents should ask schools early whether a child’s NIN details have been checked and whether the name used for WAEC will match the name used on other important records such as JAMB. Small inconsistencies can become much harder to correct after results and certificates are issued.
The practical message behind WAEC NIN 2027 is simple: current SS3 candidates should obtain a valid NIN and verify their personal details now, long before their school reaches the final registration stage. Early preparation is far safer than discovering an identity problem when the examination entry window is already closing.
What the WAEC NIN requirement means for current SS3 students
A WAEC Ikeja Zonal Office circular dated September 29, 2026 says a valid National Identification Number will be required for WASSCE for School Candidates registration from the 2027 exercise. Because school-candidate WASSCE registration is handled by schools, students should not interpret the notice as an instruction to buy a form individually. The immediate action is to make sure the candidate has a valid NIN and that the identity details match the school’s records.
Names matter. A mismatch between the spelling/order of names on NIN, school records, WAEC and later JAMB records can create avoidable identity problems. Parents should check the candidate’s surname, first name, middle name and date of birth early enough to correct legitimate errors through the responsible agency before WASSCE registration begins.
How to obtain or correct a NIN safely
- Read NIMC’s official guidance at nimc.gov.ng/NIN. NIMC states that citizens and legal residents, including minors, can enrol and that NIN enrolment itself is free.
- Locate an authorised NIMC enrolment centre/partner. Do not send a child’s identity data to an app or social-media account simply because it claims to “generate NIN.”
- Complete the enrolment/biometric process and collect the NIN slip or official confirmation.
- Compare the names and date of birth with the candidate’s school records immediately.
- If there is a genuine error, use NIMC’s authorised modification route before the WAEC school registration window becomes urgent.
- When 2027 school-candidate registration starts, provide the NIN to the school through the school’s authorised WAEC registration process rather than through an outsider.
NIMC’s main official website is nimc.gov.ng. WAEC’s central Nigeria website at waecnigeria.org should be monitored for nationwide registration instructions, fees and the 2027 timetable. Schools should also retain the zonal circular and any later central directive so parents are not working from an isolated screenshot.
Candidates do not need to wait until SS3 registration week to fix identity problems. Early verification is the safer approach, especially where a NIN has not yet been issued or a name differs from the candidate’s birth/school documents.
