JAMB CAPS Is Back — October 31 Deadline Puts 2026 University Admission Race on the Clock

JAMB CAPS 2026 is fully operational again after a temporary disruption, and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board is telling tertiary institutions to accelerate admissions before the national deadlines expire. For candidates waiting for an offer, the restoration means the admission process is moving again — and the next few weeks could be decisive.

JAMB says public universities are expected to conclude the 2026/2027 admission exercise by October 31, 2026. Private universities have until November 30, while polytechnics, colleges of education and other tertiary institutions are expected to finish by December 31. The Board urged institutions to recover time lost during the CAPS disruption and advised candidates to respond promptly when offers are made.

What Candidates Should Be Checking Now

Candidates should not wait for a text message from a university before checking CAPS. Admission movement can appear on JAMB’s platform before an institution finishes communicating with every applicant. A candidate may see changes such as “Admission in Progress” or an offer awaiting acceptance, and failing to respond on time can create avoidable complications. Applicants should also keep checking the institution’s own portal because admission processing usually involves both the school and JAMB.

The return of CAPS is particularly important for candidates who used NECO results that were released on September 24. JAMB has advised candidates awaiting those results to make sure their O’Level details are properly uploaded or verified so institutions can consider them. A strong UTME or Post-UTME score does not replace the required O’Level subjects, and an applicant whose result is missing from JAMB’s system may not be processed even when the grades themselves are good.

Candidates should confirm three things immediately: that their O’Level result is visible where required, that the correct institution and programme appear on their profile, and that any admission offer is accepted through CAPS rather than only on a university website. Those who changed institution or course should also verify that the change has reflected correctly.

October 31 Does Not Mean Every Offer Will Arrive on October 31

The public-university deadline is a completion deadline for the admission exercise, not a promise that candidates can safely ignore CAPS until the last day. Institutions process recommendations in batches, JAMB reviews and approves them, and candidates then need to accept the offers. Waiting until the deadline can leave very little time to resolve data errors, O’Level problems or an incorrect course.

Candidates should also be careful with social-media claims that a particular school has finished admissions simply because one batch has appeared. Unless the institution or JAMB says the exercise is closed, additional lists or programme changes may still occur. Equally, applicants should not pay anyone who claims to have a private route into CAPS; admission approval on the platform follows JAMB and institutional processes.

With JAMB CAPS 2026 restored and the public-university deadline now close, the practical message is to monitor the platform regularly, keep documents ready and respond quickly to any legitimate offer. For many applicants, the admission season has entered its most important stage.

What JAMB CAPS is doing now — and the deadlines that matter

JAMB’s Central Admissions Processing System has been restored after the temporary disruption and the Board has told institutions to accelerate the 2026/2027 admission exercise. The approved completion deadlines are October 31 for public universities, November 30 for private universities, and December 31 for polytechnics, colleges of education and other tertiary institutions. These are institutional completion deadlines, not dates candidates should wait for before checking their own status.

CAPS is designed to make JAMB the clearing house for legitimate tertiary admissions. JAMB’s official position is that an admission offered outside CAPS and without a JAMB admission letter is not recognised by the Board. Candidates should therefore treat a school portal offer as incomplete until the admission is properly reflected and accepted through the JAMB process.

How to use CAPS correctly during the final admission window

  1. Sign in through JAMB e-Facility. Use the candidate’s own registered login rather than handing the account to an “admission agent.”
  2. Open Check Admission Status and proceed into CAPS.
  3. Check Admission Status, but also inspect Transfer Approval. A candidate can remain “Not Admitted” while a programme-transfer proposal is waiting for action.
  4. Verify O’Level information. JAMB has specifically told candidates who were waiting for the newly released NECO 2026 result to make sure their credentials are uploaded/verified for institutions to consider.
  5. If an offer appears, read the institution and programme carefully before accepting or rejecting it. Once accepted, follow the JAMB and institution instructions for printing the admission letter and completing school registration.
  6. Keep checking the institution’s official portal as well. CAPS and the university/polytechnic portal serve different roles during admission processing.

JAMB’s support guidance explains that “Admission in Progress” or “Not Admitted” can persist when an institution has not completed recommendation/approval, O’Level results are missing or a transfer offer has not been accepted. The candidate should fix the specific issue rather than pay someone to “push” the admission.

JAMB’s public explanation of CAPS is available at jamb.gov.ng/caps, while the candidate service itself is inside e-Facility. Monitor both JAMB and the institution until the final admission letter can be legitimately produced.
