The Federal Ministry of Education is inviting qualified Nigerian university graduates to apply for nomination under the Commonwealth Scholarship Nigeria 2027 programme for the 2027/2028 UK academic year. The current application window is expected to close on October 20, 2026, making this a time-sensitive opportunity for graduates targeting funded postgraduate study.

The scholarship route covers one-year taught Master’s programmes and doctoral study of up to three years, subject to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission’s conditions and Nigeria’s nomination process. The Federal Ministry of Education has placed the notice prominently on its current scholarship information, while applicants are expected to complete the required online process and comply with the documentation rules.

Who Is Expected to Qualify

For the Master’s category, the Nigerian notice says applicants should hold a first degree with at least a Second Class Upper Division. PhD applicants are expected to hold a relevant Master’s degree and may present a first degree with at least Second Class Lower Division, subject to the detailed eligibility rules that apply to the scheme.

Applicants should prepare academic transcripts, a passport photograph, birth certificate and the other documentation required by the current application process. Where a foreign certificate is being used, the Ministry says the relevant official translation and evaluation should accompany it. Applicants should also follow the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission requirements for references, study plans and institutional choices.

The Ministry has encouraged candidates to connect their proposed study with Nigeria’s development priorities. Listed areas include education, health, economic growth, governance and conflict, climate and environment, water and sanitation, engineering, science and technology, food and nutrition, and humanitarian emergencies. A convincing application should therefore explain not only what the applicant wants to study but why the proposed study matters.

Do Not Wait Until October 20 to Assemble Documents

Scholarship applications often fail at the documentation stage rather than because a candidate lacks academic ability. Transcripts, admission information, references and scans can take time to obtain. Candidates should create a checklist early and make sure names and academic records are consistent across submitted documents.

Applicants should also use only the application links provided by the Federal Ministry of Education and the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission. A legitimate government scholarship should not require payment to an online agent who promises nomination or guaranteed selection.

The Commonwealth Scholarship Nigeria 2027 window gives eligible Nigerian graduates a route to postgraduate study in the United Kingdom, but the October 20 deadline is close enough that serious applicants should be finalising documents and submissions now rather than waiting for the last day.

Who can apply for the 2027/2028 Commonwealth awards

The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission has opened applications for the 2027/2028 Master’s and PhD scholarships for study beginning in the United Kingdom in September/October 2027. The CSC closing time is 16:00 BST on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. Nigerian applicants must satisfy both the CSC’s rules and the requirements of the Nigerian nominating route used by the Federal Scholarship Board; meeting one side alone does not automatically make an application complete.

For the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship, applicants must be citizens of or have refugee status in an eligible Commonwealth country, be permanently resident in an eligible country, be available to begin UK study in September/October 2027 and satisfy the academic standard stated by the CSC. For the PhD route, the CSC states that applicants should normally hold at least an upper-second-class first degree, or a lower-second-class degree plus a relevant postgraduate qualification such as a Master’s degree, and must not already be registered for a PhD or an MPhil leading to a PhD before the stated cut-off period.

The Nigerian Federal Ministry of Education has separately invited eligible Nigerian university graduates to seek nomination under the 2027/2028 Commonwealth Scholarships and Fellowship Plan. Applicants should therefore read the current Nigerian notice in addition to the CSC programme page, because a national nominating agency can impose additional eligibility or documentation rules and may use its own internal timetable.

  1. For a taught Master’s, start from the official Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships page. For a doctorate, use the official Commonwealth PhD Scholarships page.
  2. Create the application in CSC Central. The CSC says the system uses two-factor authentication, so applicants need access to a smartphone or second email account when registering and logging in.
  3. Prepare answers outside the portal before pasting them in. The CSC provides a template and guidance and explicitly recommends drafting carefully rather than writing long development-impact statements directly inside the live form.
  4. Upload all required supporting documents before the deadline. The Master’s route requires proof of citizenship/refugee status where applicable, full transcripts showing all higher-education qualifications and references that the applicant collects and uploads in PDF form. Late references are not accepted by email.
  5. Apply through an eligible nominator as well as completing the CSC form. For Nigerian candidates, the Federal Scholarship Board is the key national route; PhD applicants may also have access to approved university/university-body nomination routes depending on the programme.
  6. Monitor the email used for the application, including spam/junk folders. CSC says a scholarship offer can be withdrawn when a candidate fails to respond within the specified time.

The Federal Ministry of Education scholarship information is available at education.gov.ng, while the Federal Scholarship Board’s role and mandate are explained on the FSB page. Commonwealth applications are free; candidates should not pay an individual who promises nomination or selection.

A nomination is not the same as a final scholarship award. The CSC grades eligible nominated applications against its selection criteria and says applicants can expect outcomes by around July 2027. Applicants should also begin researching suitable UK courses/universities early instead of waiting until after nomination.
