Performance Objectives

In Islam, having good character and strong moral virtues is very important. These virtues are like good habits that help a person grow into a responsible adult. They guide how a person thinks, speaks, and acts, making them a good Muslim and a good member of society.

Memory Verse

The Holy Qur’an teaches Muslims to have good character and to live righteously. A very important verse that guides Muslims on moral virtues is from Surah An-Nahl:

Indeed, Allah enjoins justice, good conduct, and giving to relatives and forbids immorality, evil, and oppression. He admonishes you that you may take heed.

Surah An-Nahl (16:90)

This verse tells Muslims that Allah commands them to be just, to do good deeds, and to be kind to their family. It also warns against bad actions like immorality, evil, and oppression. By following this verse, Muslims can develop strong moral virtues.

Qur’an Reading

The Qur’an is full of guidance on how to live a life filled with good virtues. The Memory Verse from Surah An-Nahl (16:90) is a principal passage that highlights the importance of justice, good conduct, and kindness.

Other verses also encourage good character. For example, Surah Luqman (31:18-19) advises against arrogance and encourages moderation in walking and speaking. These teachings help Muslims build a strong foundation of moral virtues from a young age.

Vital Moral Virtues for a Responsible Adulthood

Moral virtues are good qualities that guide a person to do what is right. Developing these virtues from childhood helps a person become a responsible adult who contributes positively to their family and community. Some vital moral virtues include:

  1. Responsibility
  2. Accountability
  3. Self-discipline
  4. Respect for authority and elders

Responsibility

Responsibility means taking care of duties and doing what is expected. It means understanding that actions have consequences and that a person is expected to fulfil their roles.

For example, a responsible child completes homework on time, helps with chores at home, and takes care of belongings. A responsible adult takes care of their family, works hard, and contributes to the community.

Accountability

Accountability means being answerable for actions and accepting the consequences, whether good or bad. It means being honest about what has been done and not blaming others for mistakes.

For instance, if a child accidentally breaks something, being accountable means admitting it and apologising, rather than hiding it or lying. In adulthood, accountability means taking ownership of decisions and actions, both at home and at work.

Self-Discipline

Self-discipline is the ability to control one’s own behaviour, thoughts, and emotions to achieve a goal or follow a rule. It means doing what is right even when it is difficult or when a person would prefer to do something else.

Examples of self-discipline include waking up early for Fajr prayer, completing school assignments before playing, controlling anger when upset, and resisting the urge to eat unhealthy snacks. Self-discipline helps a person stay focused and achieve success.

Respect for Authority and Elders

Respect for authority and elders means showing honour and politeness to those who are in positions of leadership or who are older. This includes parents, teachers, religious leaders, community leaders, and older family members.

Showing respect involves listening carefully, speaking politely, obeying good instructions, and seeking advice from them. In Islam, respecting elders and those in authority is a highly valued virtue that promotes harmony and order in society.

Benefits of Exhibiting Vital Moral Virtues

Living a life guided by strong moral virtues brings many benefits, both in this world and in the hereafter. These benefits help a person to be successful, happy, and loved by Allah (SWT) and by others.

The benefits of exhibiting vital moral virtues include:

  1. Peace of Mind: When a person acts with responsibility, honesty, and kindness, they feel good about themselves and have a clear conscience.
  2. Trust from Others: People trust and rely on individuals who are responsible, accountable, and respectful. This builds strong relationships.
  3. Success in Life: Virtues like self-discipline and responsibility help a person achieve their goals in school, work, and all aspects of life.
  4. Good Relationships: Showing respect and good conduct helps a person get along well with family, friends, and neighbours, leading to a harmonious community.
  5. Pleasure of Allah (SWT): Allah loves those who have good character and follow His commands. Exhibiting moral virtues is a way to earn His rewards and blessings.
  6. A Better Community: When many people in a community exhibit strong moral virtues, the community becomes peaceful, orderly, and supportive for everyone.

By practising these vital moral virtues every day, children can grow into responsible adults who are respected by others and loved by Allah (SWT).
