Meaning of Moral Vices in Islam
Moral vices are bad actions, habits, or characters that are against the teachings of Islam. These are things that Allah (SWT) and Prophet Muhammad (SAW) have told Muslims to avoid.
Islam teaches Muslims to have good character and to do good deeds. Moral vices are the opposite of good character. They are actions that can harm a person, their family, and the community.
Qur’anic Guidance on Moral Vices
The Holy Qur’an is the book of Allah (SWT) that guides Muslims on how to live a good life. It teaches Muslims what is right and what is wrong. The Qur’an clearly tells Muslims to stay away from moral vices.
Memory Verse
The following verse from the Holy Qur’an reminds Muslims about the importance of good conduct and avoiding bad actions:
إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُ بِالْعَدْلِ وَالْإِحْسَانِ وَإِيتَاءِ ذِي الْقُرْبَىٰ وَيَنْهَىٰ عَنِ الْفَحْشَاءِ وَالْمُنكَرِ وَالْبَغْيِ ۚ يَعِظُكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ
Transliteration: Inna Allāha ya’muru bil-‘adli wal-ihsāni wa ītā’i dhil-qurbā wa yanhā ‘anil-fahshā’i wal-munkari wal-baghyi ya’izukum la’allakum tadhakkarūn.
Meaning: “Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and wrongdoing and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.”
Surah An-Nahl (16:90)
Qur’an Reading
The Holy Qur’an contains many verses that guide Muslims to avoid bad actions and adopt good character. The verse from Surah An-Nahl (16:90) is a principal passage that clearly states what Allah (SWT) commands and what He forbids. It teaches Muslims to be just, kind, and helpful to their relatives, and to stay away from all forms of immorality, wrongdoing, and oppression.
Identifying Moral Vices
It is important for Muslims to know and recognise moral vices so they can avoid them. These bad actions can lead to many problems for individuals and for society.
Examples of moral vices include:
- Telling Lies: This is when a person says something that is not true, knowing it is false. Lying breaks trust between people.
- Dishonesty: This means not being truthful or fair in actions, especially when dealing with others’ property or rights. For example, cheating in an exam or stealing something is dishonesty.
- Arrogance: This is when a person thinks they are better than others and acts proudly or boastfully. An arrogant person looks down on others and does not accept advice.
- Envy: This is feeling unhappy or jealous when someone else has something good, and wishing that good thing would go away from them or come to you instead.
Other moral vices that Muslims should avoid include backbiting (talking bad about someone behind their back), slandering (spreading false rumours about someone), and being wasteful.
Implications of Moral Vices
Moral vices have many negative consequences, both in this life and in the hereafter. These consequences are called implications.
Some implications of moral vices are:
- Displeasure of Allah (SWT): Allah (SWT) dislikes bad actions. A person who commits moral vices earns the displeasure of Allah (SWT) and may face punishment in the hereafter.
- Loss of Trust: When a person tells lies or is dishonest, others will stop trusting them. People will not believe what they say or rely on them.
- Loneliness and Isolation: People generally avoid those who are arrogant, envious, or dishonest. This can make a person feel lonely and isolated from friends and family.
- Conflict and Disunity: Moral vices like envy, dishonesty, and arrogance can cause arguments and fights among people. This leads to disunity in families, schools, and communities.
- Lack of Peace: A person who constantly engages in moral vices will not find true peace in their heart. They may feel guilty, worried, or unhappy.
- Bad Reputation: People who commit moral vices often get a bad reputation. Others will see them as bad examples and may not want to associate with them.
Avoiding moral vices helps a person to live a peaceful life, earn the pleasure of Allah (SWT), and build a strong, loving community.
