Meaning, Types and Significance of Hajj and Umrah for Primary 4

Performance Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. explain the meaning of Hajj;
  2. identify the types of Hajj;
  3. explain the significance of observing Hajj;
  4. distinguish between Hajj and Umrah.

Introduction to Hajj

Hajj is a very important journey for Muslims. It is a special trip to the holy city of Makkah in Saudi Arabia. Makkah is where the Kaaba, a sacred house of worship, is located.

Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam. The five pillars are the most important acts of worship that Muslims perform. Every Muslim who is strong enough and has enough money is expected to go on Hajj at least once in their life.

Meaning of Hajj

Hajj is the annual pilgrimage to the holy city of Makkah in Saudi Arabia.

It is a journey that every Muslim who is physically and financially able must make at least once in their lifetime. During Hajj, Muslims perform a series of religious rituals in and around Makkah, all for the sake of Allah.

Qur’an Reading on Hajj

The Qur’an teaches Muslims about the importance of Hajj. A key verse about Hajj is found in Surah Al-Imran:

Surah Al-Imran (3:97)

Meaning: “In it are clear signs [such as] the standing place of Abraham. And whoever enters it shall be safe. And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House – for whoever is able to find thereto a way. But whoever disbelieves – then indeed, Allah is free from need of the worlds.”

This verse clearly states that Hajj to the Kaaba (the House) is a duty for those who are able to perform it.

Types of Hajj

There are three main ways a Muslim can perform Hajj. These types depend on whether the pilgrim performs Umrah (a lesser pilgrimage) along with Hajj, and how they combine the two.

The types of Hajj are:

  1. Hajj Ifrad: This type of Hajj involves performing only the Hajj rituals. The pilgrim makes the intention for Hajj alone and does not perform Umrah with it. This is usually for people who live in Makkah or nearby.
  2. Hajj Tamattu’: This is the most common type of Hajj. The pilgrim first performs Umrah, then takes a break from the state of Ihram (sacred state) before starting the Hajj rituals later in the same journey. This means they perform Umrah and Hajj separately, but within the same trip.
  3. Hajj Qiran: In this type, the pilgrim makes the intention to perform both Umrah and Hajj together, without taking a break from the state of Ihram in between. They perform the rituals for both pilgrimages continuously.

Significance of Observing Hajj

Hajj is a very important act of worship in Islam, and it brings many benefits to the pilgrim and the Muslim community. The significance of observing Hajj includes:

  1. Spiritual Upliftment: Hajj is a deeply spiritual journey that helps pilgrims feel closer to Allah. It is a time for prayer, reflection, and seeking forgiveness for sins. Many pilgrims feel a renewed sense of faith and purpose after completing Hajj.
  2. Brotherhood and Unity: During Hajj, millions of Muslims from all over the world gather in one place. They all wear similar simple clothes called Ihram. This creates a strong feeling of unity and equality, showing that all Muslims are brothers and sisters, no matter where they come from or how rich they are.
  3. Fulfilment of Religious Obligation: For those who are able, performing Hajj is a direct command from Allah and a pillar of Islam. Completing Hajj means fulfilling a major religious duty, which brings great reward and satisfaction to the pilgrim.

Differences Between Hajj and Umrah

Both Hajj and Umrah are pilgrimages to Makkah, but they have important differences:

  1. Obligation: Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam and is obligatory for every Muslim who is physically and financially able, at least once in their lifetime. Umrah is not obligatory but is highly recommended (Sunnah) and brings great rewards.
  2. Time: Hajj can only be performed during specific days of the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah (the 12th month of the Islamic calendar). Umrah can be performed at any time of the year.
  3. Rituals: Hajj involves more rituals and takes several days to complete. These rituals include standing at Mount Arafat, spending time in Muzdalifah, and stoning the pillars (Jamarat). Umrah involves fewer rituals, mainly Tawaf (circling the Kaaba) and Sa’i (walking between Safa and Marwah), and can be completed in a few hours.
  4. Duration: Hajj lasts for about five to six days, or sometimes longer, depending on the pilgrim’s schedule. Umrah is much shorter, usually taking only a few hours to complete.
