Introduction to Reciting and Memorising the Qur’an

The Qur’an is the holy book of Islam, containing the words of Allah (God) revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Reciting the Qur’an means reading it aloud correctly, while memorising it means learning it by heart. Both are very important acts of worship in Islam, bringing many rewards and blessings.

When Muslims recite the Qur’an, they connect with Allah and understand His messages. Memorising parts of the Qur’an helps Muslims to remember Allah’s guidance and use it in their daily lives, especially during prayers.

Memory Verse

A memory verse helps learners remember an important message. For this lesson, the memory verse reminds Muslims about the ease of memorising the Qur’an and encourages them to do so.

The memory verse is from Surah Al-Qamar, Ayah 17:

وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْآنَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ

Transliteration: Wa laqad yassarnal-Qur’ana lidh-dhikri fahal mim muddakir.

Meaning: “And We have certainly made the Qur’an easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?”

This ayah teaches that Allah has made the Qur’an easy to remember and understand for those who try. It encourages everyone to learn and memorise its verses.

Recitation and Memorisation of Surahs

This section provides the Arabic text, transliteration, English meaning, and a simple lesson for each of the five Surahs. Learners should practise reciting each Surah correctly and then work towards memorising them.

Surah Quraish (Chapter 106)

Surah Quraish is the 106th chapter of the Qur’an and has 4 verses. It was revealed in Makkah.

This Surah reminds the Quraish tribe of Makkah about Allah’s blessings upon them, especially the safety and security they enjoyed during their trade journeys.

  2. إِيلَافِهِمْ رِحْلَةَ الشِّتَاءِ وَالصَّيْفِ
  3. فَلْيَعْبُدُوا رَبَّ هَٰذَا الْبَيْتِ
  4. الَّذِي أَطْعَمَهُم مِّن جُوعٍ وَآمَنَهُم مِّنْ خَوْفٍ

Transliteration:

  1. Li’eelaafi Quraish
  2. Eelaafihim rihlatash-shitaa’i was-saif

Simple Lesson: Allah protected the Quraish tribe and provided for them, so they should worship Him alone and be grateful for His blessings.

Surah Al-Fil (Chapter 105)

Surah Al-Fil is the 105th chapter of the Qur’an and has 5 verses. It was revealed in Makkah.

This Surah tells the story of the Army of the Elephant, led by Abraha, who tried to destroy the Ka’bah in Makkah. Allah protected His House by sending birds that dropped stones on the army.

  1. أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِأَصْحَابِ الْفِيلِ
  2. أَلَمْ يَجْعَلْ كَيْدَهُمْ فِي تَضْلِيلٍ
  3. وَأَرْسَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ طَيْرًا أَبَابِيلَ
  4. تَرْمِيهِم بِحِجَارَةٍ مِّن سِجِّيلٍ

Simple Lesson: Allah protects His House and His religion. No one can harm what Allah protects. This shows Allah’s great power.

Tips for Correct Recitation

Reciting the Qur’an correctly means pronouncing the Arabic letters and words clearly and following the rules of Tajweed (the science of Qur’anic recitation). For Primary 4 learners, focus on these simple tips:

  1. Listen Carefully: Listen to a good reciter (Qari) using an audio device (like an MP3 player or VCD) and try to imitate their pronunciation.
  2. Read Slowly: Do not rush. Read each word clearly and slowly.
  3. Open Your Mouth: Make sure your mouth is open enough to pronounce the letters correctly.
  4. Practise Regularly: The more you practise, the better you will become. Try to recite a little bit every day.
  5. Ask for Help: If you are unsure about how to pronounce a word, ask your teacher or an adult who knows how to recite the Qur’an.

Tips for Memorising the Qur’an

Memorising the Qur’an requires effort and patience. Here are some helpful tips for learning these Surahs by heart:

  1. Understand the Meaning: Knowing what each Surah means can help you remember the verses better.
  2. Break it Down: Do not try to memorise a whole Surah at once. Break it into smaller parts, like one or two verses at a time.
  3. Repeat, Repeat, Repeat: Read the verses you want to memorise many times. Repeat them aloud until you can say them without looking.
  4. Listen and Recite Along: Listen to the audio recitation of the Surah and try to recite along with it. This helps with both pronunciation and memorisation.
  5. Recite in Prayer: Once you have memorised a few verses, try to recite them during your daily prayers (Salat). This helps to strengthen your memory.
  6. Review Regularly: Do not just memorise and forget. Regularly review the Surahs you have learned to keep them fresh in your mind.
  7. Be Patient: Memorising the Qur’an takes time. Do not get discouraged if it feels difficult at first. Keep trying, and Allah will help you.
