History of the Great Prophets and the Four Rightly Guided Caliphs
Performance Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- discuss the biography of the Prophets (Ulul Azm A.S.);
- narrate the biography of the four rightly guided caliphs (R.A.);
- explain the contributions made by the rightly guided caliphs;
- state the moral lessons from their biographies.
Introduction to Prophets and Caliphs
Allah sent many prophets to guide humanity to the right path. These prophets taught people to worship Allah alone and to live good lives. Among them were special prophets known as Ulul Azm, meaning “those of strong will and determination.” They faced many challenges but remained steadfast in their mission.
After the last Prophet, Muhammad (SAW), passed away, his companions continued to lead the Muslim community. Four of these great leaders are known as the Rightly Guided Caliphs. They followed the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and worked hard to spread Islam and establish justice.
Memory Verse
The Qur’an teaches about the importance of following the example of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
Surah Al-Ahzab (33), Ayah 21
Meaning: “Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have a good example to follow for whoever hopes in Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah often.”
Qur’an Reading
This verse reminds Muslims that Prophet Muhammad (SAW) is a perfect role model. His life, actions, and teachings show how to live according to Allah’s will. The other great prophets and the Rightly Guided Caliphs also followed this path of guidance and righteousness.
The Great Prophets (Ulul Azm)
The Ulul Azm prophets were chosen by Allah for their exceptional patience, perseverance, and strong faith in the face of great difficulties. They delivered Allah’s messages to their people, even when they were rejected and persecuted.
Prophet Nuh (AS)
Prophet Nuh (Noah) was sent to a people who worshipped idols. He called them to worship Allah alone for 950 years, but most of them refused to listen. Allah commanded him to build a large ark, and when it was finished, a great flood covered the earth. Prophet Nuh (AS) and the believers, along with pairs of animals, were saved in the ark.
Prophet Ibrahim (AS)
Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) was a great prophet who challenged his people’s idol worship. He even broke their idols to show them that these statues could not help themselves. Because of his strong faith, his people tried to burn him in a huge fire, but Allah saved him. Prophet Ibrahim (AS) also rebuilt the Ka’bah in Makkah with his son, Prophet Ismail (AS).
Prophet Musa (AS)
Prophet Musa (Moses) was sent to Pharaoh and the Children of Israel in Egypt. Pharaoh was a very proud and cruel ruler. Allah gave Prophet Musa (AS) many miracles, including his staff turning into a snake and his hand glowing white. When Pharaoh pursued Prophet Musa (AS) and his people, Allah split the Red Sea, allowing them to cross safely, and then drowned Pharaoh and his army. Prophet Musa (AS) received the Torah from Allah on Mount Sinai.
Prophet Isa (AS)
Prophet Isa (Jesus) was born miraculously to Maryam (Mary) without a father. Allah gave him the ability to perform many miracles, such as healing the sick, giving sight to the blind, and even raising the dead, all by Allah’s permission. He called his people to worship Allah alone and taught them the Injil (Gospel). Prophet Isa (AS) was raised to the heavens by Allah and will return before the Day of Judgment.
Prophet Muhammad (SAW)
Prophet Muhammad (SAW) is the last and final prophet sent by Allah to all of mankind. He was born in Makkah and received the first revelation of the Qur’an at the age of 40. He taught people about Tawhid (the oneness of Allah) and how to live a life of peace, justice, and good character. He migrated from Makkah to Madinah (this journey is called the Hijra) and established the first Muslim community. His life is a perfect example for all Muslims to follow.
The Four Rightly Guided Caliphs
After the passing of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), four of his closest companions led the Muslim community. They are known as the Rightly Guided Caliphs (Al-Khulafa ar-Rashidun) because they followed the Prophet’s teachings and example very closely. They were wise, just, and dedicated leaders.
Abubakar (RA)
Abubakar (RA) was the first Caliph of Islam and a very close friend of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). He was known for his honesty, kindness, and strong faith. He supported the Prophet (SAW) in every way, including during the Hijra to Madinah. After the Prophet’s death, Abubakar (RA) united the Muslim community and led them through difficult times, including fighting against those who turned away from Islam.

He established many important systems, such as the Islamic calendar and the public treasury (Bayt al-Mal), to ensure fairness and good governance for all Muslims. He was famous for walking among the people to understand their needs and solve their problems.
Uthman (RA)
Uthman (RA) was the third Caliph and was known for his generosity, modesty, and piety. He was a wealthy merchant who spent much of his wealth for the sake of Islam. During his time, the Islamic state continued to expand. His most significant contribution was the standardisation of the Holy Qur’an, ensuring that all Muslims had the same authentic text of Allah’s book.
Ali (RA)
Ali (RA) was the fourth Caliph, a cousin and son-in-law of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). He was known for his bravery, deep knowledge of Islam, and eloquence. He was a courageous warrior and a wise judge. His caliphate faced many internal challenges, but he always strived to uphold justice and the teachings of Islam.
