What is the Qur’an?

The Qur’an is the holy book of Islam. It contains the words of Allah (God) that were revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Muslims read the Qur’an to learn about Allah and how to live a good life.

What are Suwar (Chapters)?

The Qur’an is divided into many parts called Suwar. Each Surah is like a chapter in a book. We will learn to recite and memorise some short and important Suwar.

Memory Verse

It is good to remember Allah always. Reciting the Qur’an helps us to remember Allah. Allah says in the Qur’an:

فَاذْكُرُونِي أَذْكُرْكُمْ

Meaning: “So remember Me; I will remember you.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayah 152)

This ayah teaches us that when we remember Allah, He remembers us too. Reciting the Qur’an is a way to remember Allah.

Reciting Surah Al-Fatiha (The Opening)

Surah Al-Fatiha is the first chapter of the Qur’an. It is a very important prayer that Muslims recite in every prayer (Salat). It asks Allah for guidance and help.

The meaning of Surah Al-Fatiha is:

  1. In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
  2. All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
  3. The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
  4. Sovereign of the Day of Recompense.
  5. It is You we worship and You we ask for help.
  6. Guide us to the straight path.
  7. The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favour, not of those who have evoked [Your] wrath or of those who are astray.

Reciting Surah Al-Ikhlas (The Sincerity)

Surah Al-Ikhlas teaches us about the Oneness of Allah. It tells us that Allah is One, He has no children, and no one is like Him.

The Arabic text of Surah Al-Ikhlas is:

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ

اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ

لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ

وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ

The meaning of Surah Al-Ikhlas is:

  1. In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
  2. Say, “He is Allah, [who is] One.”
  3. “Allah, the Eternal Refuge.”
  4. “He neither begets nor is born.”
  5. “Nor is there to Him any equivalent.”

Reciting Surah Al-Falaq (The Daybreak)

Surah Al-Falaq is a prayer for protection. It asks Allah to protect us from evil things, like darkness, magic, and envy.

The Arabic text of Surah Al-Falaq is:

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ

مِن شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

وَمِن شَرِّ غَاسِقٍ إِذَا وَقَبَ

وَمِن شَرِّ النَّفَّاثَاتِ فِي الْعُقَدِ

وَمِن شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ

The meaning of Surah Al-Falaq is:

  1. In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
  2. Say, “I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak.”
  3. “From the evil of that which He created.”
  4. “And from the evil of darkness when it settles.”
  5. “And from the evil of the blowers in knots.”
  6. “And from the evil of an envier when he envies.”

Reciting Surah An-Nas (Mankind)

Surah An-Nas is also a prayer for protection. It asks Allah to protect us from evil whispers that come from jinn and people, which can make us do bad things.

The Arabic text of Surah An-Nas is:

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ

مَلِكِ النَّاسِ

إِلَٰهِ النَّاسِ

مِن شَرِّ الْوَسْوَاسِ الْخَنَّاسِ

الَّذِي يُوَسْوِسُ فِي صُدُورِ النَّاسِ

مِنَ الْجِنَّةِ وَالنَّاسِ

The meaning of Surah An-Nas is:

  1. In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
  2. Say, “I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind.”
  3. “The Sovereign of mankind.”
  4. “The God of mankind.”
  5. “From the evil of the retreating whisperer.”
  6. “Who whispers [evil] into the breasts of mankind.”
  7. “From among the jinn and mankind.”

Memorising the Suwar

Memorising these Suwar means learning them by heart so you can recite them without looking at the book. This is a very good skill to have as a Muslim.

Steps for Memorising the Suwar:

The procedure involves the following steps:

  1. Listen Carefully: Listen to a recording of the Surah being recited by a good reciter. You can use an audio player or a phone. Listen many times.
  2. Repeat After Listening: After listening to a small part (one or two verses), try to repeat it exactly as you heard it.
  3. Read Along: Look at the Arabic text in a copy of the Qur’an while you listen and repeat. This helps you connect the sounds with the words.
  4. Break into Small Parts: Do not try to memorise the whole Surah at once. Break it into smaller parts, like one or two verses at a time.
  5. Repeat Each Part: Repeat each small part many times until you can say it without looking.
  6. Join the Parts: Once you have memorised a few parts, try to join them together and recite them.
  7. Recite to Someone: Recite the Surah to an adult, like your parent or teacher. They can help you correct any mistakes.
  8. Practice Daily: Practice reciting the memorised Suwar every day. The more you practice, the better you will remember them.

Why Memorise These Suwar?

Memorising Surah Al-Fatiha, Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas is very important because:

  1. For Prayer (Salat): Surah Al-Fatiha is a must for every prayer. The other short Suwar are also recited in prayers.
  2. For Protection: Surah Al-Falaq and An-Nas protect us from evil. It is good to recite them in the morning and evening.
  3. To Remember Allah: Reciting these Suwar helps us to remember Allah and His greatness.
