Performance Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. state the meaning and importance of manicure and pedicure;
  2. select appropriate tools for manicure and pedicure;
  3. perform basic manicure and pedicure.

Meaning of Manicure and Pedicure

Manicure and pedicure are beauty treatments that focus on keeping the hands, feet, and nails clean, healthy, and attractive.

What is Manicure?

Manicure is a beauty treatment for the hands and fingernails.

It involves cleaning, shaping, and polishing the fingernails, as well as caring for the skin on the hands.

What is Pedicure?

Pedicure is a beauty treatment for the feet and toenails.

It involves cleaning, shaping, and polishing the toenails, and caring for the skin on the feet, especially removing rough skin.

Importance of Manicure and Pedicure

Manicure and pedicure are important for several reasons related to hygiene, health, and appearance.

  1. Maintains Hygiene: Regular cleaning of nails and skin helps to remove dirt, germs, and dead skin cells, which improves overall hygiene.
  2. Promotes Health: Keeping nails trimmed and clean can prevent common problems like ingrown nails and nail infections. Caring for the skin on the feet can also prevent dryness and cracking.
  3. Enhances Appearance: Well-groomed hands and feet look neat and attractive. Polished nails add to a person’s overall neatness.
  4. Improves Comfort: Softening rough skin on the feet and keeping nails smooth can make walking and daily activities more comfortable.
  5. Boosts Confidence: Having clean and well-cared-for hands and feet can make a person feel better about themselves and more confident.

Tools and Materials for Manicure and Pedicure

Performing a manicure or pedicure requires specific tools and materials to achieve the best results. Many tools are used for both treatments, while some are specific to either hands or feet.

The common tools and materials include:

  1. Nail Clippers: These are used to trim and shorten nails. They come in different sizes for fingernails and toenails.
  2. Nail File: A nail file is used to shape the edges of the nails and smooth out any rough spots after clipping.
  3. Cuticle Pusher: This tool is used to gently push back the cuticles from the nail plate. Cuticles are the skin at the base of the nail.
  4. Cuticle Remover: This is a liquid product applied to the cuticles to soften them, making them easier to push back.
  5. Nail Polish Remover: This liquid is used with cotton pads to remove old nail polish from the nails.
  6. Cotton Pads or Balls: These are used to apply nail polish remover, cuticle remover, and other liquids.
  7. Warm Water and Soap: Used for soaking hands or feet to soften the skin and nails before treatment.
  8. Towel: Used for drying hands and feet after soaking.
  9. Nail Brush: A small brush used to scrub and clean under and around the nails.
  10. Hand Lotion or Moisturiser: Applied to the hands after a manicure to keep the skin soft and hydrated.
  11. Foot Lotion or Moisturiser: Applied to the feet after a pedicure to keep the skin soft and hydrated.
  12. Nail Polish: This includes a base coat (to protect the nail), coloured polish (for decoration), and a top coat (to add shine and protect the colour).

Specific tools for pedicure include:

  1. Callus Remover: This is a liquid or gel product applied to rough, hardened skin (calluses) on the feet to soften it, making it easier to remove.
  2. Foot File or Pumice Stone: These tools are used to gently scrub and smooth away softened calluses and rough skin from the heels and soles of the feet.

Steps for a Manicure

Performing a basic manicure involves several steps to clean, shape, and beautify the fingernails and hands. Always ensure your tools are clean before starting.

The procedure involves the following steps:

  1. Prepare Your Workspace: Gather all the necessary tools and materials. Ensure your work area is clean and well-lit.
  2. Remove Old Nail Polish: Soak a cotton pad with nail polish remover. Gently wipe off any old nail polish from each fingernail until they are clean.
  3. Shape the Nails: If the nails are too long, use nail clippers to trim them to the desired length. Then, use a nail file to gently shape the edges of each nail. File in one direction to avoid weakening the nails.
  4. Soak Hands: Fill a small bowl with warm, soapy water. Soak your hands in the water for about 5 to 10 minutes. This helps to soften the cuticles and nails, making them easier to work with.
  5. Clean and Push Back Cuticles: Remove one hand from the water and gently dry it with a towel. Use a nail brush to clean under and around the nails. Apply a small amount of cuticle remover to the base of each nail. Then, use a cuticle pusher to gently push back the softened cuticles from the nail plate. Do not cut the cuticles. Repeat for the other hand.
  6. Moisturise Hands: Apply a good quality hand lotion or moisturiser to your hands. Gently massage it into your skin and around your nails.
  7. Apply Nail Polish (Optional): If you wish to apply nail polish, first ensure your nails are completely dry and free of any lotion.
    1. Apply a thin layer of base coat to each nail. This protects your nails from staining and helps the polish last longer.
    2. Once the base coat is dry, apply one or two thin coats of your chosen coloured nail polish. Allow each coat to dry before applying the next.
    3. Finish with a thin layer of top coat. This adds shine and helps to protect the coloured polish from chipping.
  8. Clean Up: Clean all your tools and store them properly for future use.

Steps for a Pedicure

A basic pedicure focuses on cleaning, shaping, and caring for the toenails and the skin on the feet. Just like with manicure, ensure all tools are clean before you begin.

The procedure involves the following steps:

  1. Prepare Your Workspace: Gather all the necessary tools and materials. Ensure your work area is clean and comfortable.
  2. Remove Old Nail Polish: Soak a cotton pad with nail polish remover. Gently wipe off any old nail polish from each toenail until they are clean.
  3. Soak Feet: Fill a basin or foot spa with warm, soapy water. You can add some foot soak salts if available. Soak your feet in the water for about 5 to 10 minutes. This helps to soften the skin, calluses, and toenails.
  4. Clean and Shape Toenails: Remove one foot from the water and gently dry it with a towel. Use a nail brush to clean under and around the toenails. Use nail clippers to trim toenails straight across to prevent ingrown nails. Then, use a nail file to gently smooth the edges of each toenail.
  5. Address Rough Skin: If you have rough skin or calluses on your heels or soles, apply a small amount of callus remover to those areas. Allow it to sit for a few minutes as directed by the product. Then, use a foot file or pumice stone to gently scrub and smooth away the softened rough skin. Be gentle to avoid irritation. Repeat for the other foot.
  6. Push Back Cuticles: Apply a small amount of cuticle remover to the base of each toenail. Use a cuticle pusher to gently push back the softened cuticles from the nail plate. Do not cut the cuticles.
  7. Moisturise Feet: Apply a generous amount of foot lotion or moisturiser to your feet. Gently massage it into your skin, paying attention to the heels and soles.
  8. Apply Nail Polish (Optional): If you wish to apply nail polish, ensure your toenails are completely dry and free of any lotion.
    1. Apply a thin layer of base coat to each toenail.
    2. Once the base coat is dry, apply one or two thin coats of your chosen coloured nail polish. Allow each coat to dry before applying the next.
    3. Finish with a thin layer of top coat for shine and protection.
  9. Clean Up: Clean all your tools and store them properly for future use.
