Qualities of a Good Business Opportunity
Performance Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- describe the qualities of a good business opportunity;
- access and rank business opportunities.
Meaning of a Business Opportunity
A business opportunity is a favorable set of circumstances or a gap in the market that creates a need for a new product, service, or business venture.
In the beauty and cosmetology industry, a business opportunity arises when there is a clear demand for specific beauty services or products that are either unavailable or poorly provided in a community. Examples include a lack of professional nail salons in a newly developed residential area, a high demand for organic skincare products made from local ingredients like shea butter, or the need for mobile bridal makeup services.
Not every beauty business idea is a genuine business opportunity. An idea only becomes a viable opportunity when it is commercially attractive, durable, timely, and anchored in a product or service that creates value for the customer.
Qualities of a Good Business Opportunity
To determine whether a beauty or cosmetology concept is worth investing time and capital, entrepreneurs evaluate it against specific standards. The essential qualities of a good business opportunity include:
- High Market Demand: There must be a substantial and ready market of customers who are willing and able to pay for the beauty service or product. A salon offering specialized natural hair care, for example, must have a target audience of individuals seeking those specific services.
- Profitability: The opportunity must have the potential to generate more revenue than the cost of running the business. This means the pricing of services (such as haircuts, facials, or manicures) must cover the cost of beauty products, rent, electricity, water, and labor, while leaving a healthy profit margin.
- Low or Manageable Start-up Costs: The initial capital required to purchase equipment, secure a shop, and buy starting inventory should be realistic and within the reach of the entrepreneur.
- Availability of Resources: A viable opportunity relies on the steady availability of raw materials, beauty products, reliable water and electricity supply, and skilled personnel such as professional hairstylists or makeup artists.
- Scalability: A good business opportunity has room for growth. It should allow the entrepreneur to expand operations, open new branches, or introduce additional services as demand increases.
- Sustainability and Durability: The demand for the service or product must be long-lasting rather than a short-lived fashion trend. Basic grooming, hair care, and skincare are durable needs that persist regardless of changing seasons.
- Alignment with Personal Skills and Passion: The opportunity should match the technical skills, training, and interests of the entrepreneur. A cosmetologist trained in advanced skincare will find greater success in a spa venture than in a complex wig-manufacturing business.
Assessing and Ranking Business Opportunities
Entrepreneurs often have multiple beauty business ideas but limited resources to execute them simultaneously. Assessment and ranking allow the entrepreneur to systematically evaluate each option and select the one with the highest chance of success.
Assessment involves analyzing each business idea against a set of established criteria, such as market demand, start-up cost, skill requirement, and profit potential. Ranking is the process of scoring these ideas and arranging them in order of viability.
To perform this evaluation, a structured tool known as an Assessment Matrix or Decision Table is used. Each criterion is assigned a score, typically on a scale of 1 to 5, where 1 represents “very poor” or “highly unfavorable” and 5 represents “excellent” or “highly favorable.”
The table below illustrates how three different cosmetology business ideas can be assessed and ranked:
| Business Idea | Market Demand (1-5) | Affordable Start-up Cost (1-5) | Skill Availability (1-5) | Profit Potential (1-5) | Total Score | Rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mobile Makeup Artistry | 4 | 5 | 4 | 4 | 17 | 1st |
| Natural Skincare Production | 3 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 12 | 3rd |
| Unisex Hair Salon | 5 | 2 | 4 | 4 | 15 | 2nd |
Based on the assessment table above, Mobile Makeup Artistry ranks first because it requires very low start-up capital (since there is no shop rent) and has high demand and skill availability. The Unisex Hair Salon ranks second due to higher start-up costs for salon setup and equipment, while Natural Skincare Production ranks third due to the high cost of raw materials, packaging, and regulatory approvals.
Observe the diagram below to see how an assessment matrix can be prepared on a cardboard sheet for classroom or business planning purposes.
How to Assess and Rank Cosmetology Business Opportunities
This practical activity guides learners on how to use cardboard papers, markers, and structured tables to evaluate and select the best beauty business opportunity.
The required materials are:
- White or colored cardboard sheets
- Permanent markers of different colors
- A long ruler
- Pencils and erasers
- A notepad for brainstorming
The procedure involves the following steps:
- Divide into small working groups of four to five students.
- Brainstorm and write down three distinct beauty business ideas relevant to the local community (for example, Braiding Salon, Nail Art Studio, or Organic Soap Making).
- Place the cardboard sheet horizontally on a flat table.
- Use a pencil and a long ruler to draw a grid table with seven columns and five rows.
- Trace over the pencil lines with a dark permanent marker to make the table clear and visible.
- Write the column headings in the first row: Business Idea, Market Demand, Start-up Cost, Technical Skill, Profit Potential, Total Score, and Rank.
- Write the three brainstormed business ideas in the first column of rows two, three, and four.
- Discuss within the group and assign a score from 1 to 5 for each criterion. Write these scores in the corresponding cells using a colored marker.
- Add up the scores horizontally for each business idea and write the sum in the “Total Score” column.
- Compare the total scores and assign ranks (1st, 2nd, and 3rd) in the “Rank” column, where the highest score gets the 1st rank.
- Present the completed cardboard chart to the class, explaining the reasons behind the scores assigned to each business opportunity.
Summary
Identifying a good business opportunity in cosmetology requires careful observation of market needs and a realistic evaluation of available resources. By using systematic tools like the assessment matrix on cardboard, prospective beauty entrepreneurs can minimize financial risks and select the most viable and profitable business path.
