Meaning of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ

The second coming of Jesus Christ refers to the future, literal, visible, and glorious return of Jesus Christ to Earth. This event is a central belief in Christianity, signifying the culmination of God’s plan for humanity and creation.

After Jesus completed His earthly ministry, died on the cross, resurrected, and spent forty days with His disciples, He ascended into heaven. As He ascended, two angels appeared to the disciples and assured them that Jesus would return in the same way He departed. This promised return is known as the Second Coming.

The first coming of Jesus was marked by humility, as He came as a baby born in a manger to save humanity from sin. His second coming, however, will be marked by power, glory, and majesty, as He will come to judge the living and the dead, establish His eternal kingdom, and bring an end to the present age.

Jesus Christ will return to Earth in glory, just as He ascended into heaven.

Signs of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ

The Bible provides various signs that indicate the approaching second coming of Jesus Christ. These signs are not meant to pinpoint an exact date, but rather to alert believers to the nearness of His return and encourage readiness.

Some of the key signs mentioned in scripture include:

  1. Wars and Rumours of Wars: Jesus stated that there would be conflicts between nations and kingdoms. These events are described as the beginning of sorrows, indicating increasing global instability.
  2. Famines, Pestilences, and Earthquakes: Natural disasters and widespread suffering, including food shortages, diseases, and seismic activities, are also identified as signs. These events will increase in frequency and intensity.
  3. Persecution of Christians: Believers will face hatred, persecution, and even death for their faith in Jesus Christ. This suffering will be a test of their endurance and commitment.
  4. False Prophets and False Christs: Many individuals will arise, claiming to be Christ or prophets sent by God, deceiving many people with false teachings and miracles.
  5. Increase in Lawlessness and Coldness of Love: Moral decay, widespread wickedness, and a decline in love among people will become more prevalent. This indicates a general turning away from God’s standards.
  6. Preaching of the Gospel to All Nations: Before the end comes, the good news of the Kingdom of God must be preached throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations. This global evangelisation is a crucial sign.
  7. Signs in the Sun, Moon, and Stars: Dramatic celestial phenomena, such as the darkening of the sun and moon, and the falling of stars, are also described as signs that will precede Jesus’ return.

These signs serve as warnings and reminders for believers to remain vigilant and steadfast in their faith, knowing that the Lord’s return is drawing near.

Preparation for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ

The Bible consistently urges believers to prepare for the second coming of Jesus Christ. This preparation involves living a life that honours God and reflects the teachings of Christ. Matthew 25:31-46 provides a powerful illustration of what this preparation entails, focusing on practical acts of love and service towards others.

The passage describes the judgment of the nations, where Jesus separates people like a shepherd separates sheep from goats. The basis for this judgment is how individuals treated “the least of these,” referring to those in need. Those who showed compassion and practical help to the hungry, thirsty, strangers, naked, sick, and imprisoned are welcomed into the eternal kingdom, while those who neglected these acts of mercy are condemned.

Therefore, preparation for the second coming of Jesus Christ includes:

  1. Living a Righteous and Holy Life: Striving to live according to God’s commandments, avoiding sin, and pursuing holiness in all aspects of life. This involves personal devotion, prayer, and studying the Bible.
  2. Being Watchful and Prayerful: Remaining spiritually alert, constantly praying, and being aware of the times, without becoming complacent or distracted by worldly concerns.
  3. Spreading the Gospel: Actively sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with others, fulfilling the Great Commission to make disciples of all nations.
  4. Caring for Others (Matthew 25:31-46): Demonstrating practical love and compassion towards those in need. This includes:
    1. Feeding the Hungry: Providing food for those who lack it.
    2. Giving Drink to the Thirsty: Offering water or other beverages to those in need.
    3. Welcoming Strangers: Showing hospitality and kindness to newcomers or those without a home.
    4. Clothing the Naked: Providing garments for those who are poorly clothed or lack adequate attire.
    5. Visiting the Sick: Offering comfort, support, and practical help to those who are ill.
    6. Visiting the Imprisoned: Showing care and concern for those in confinement.
  5. Living in Obedience to God’s Commandments: Obeying God’s laws and principles, not out of fear, but out of love and gratitude for His salvation.

These acts of service are not merely good deeds but are seen as service rendered directly to Jesus Christ Himself. By actively engaging in these acts of love and mercy, believers demonstrate their faith and readiness for His glorious return.
