Meaning and Importance of Graphic Design
Graphic design is the art and practice of planning and arranging visual elements such as text, images, and shapes to communicate a message to an audience.
Graphic design is used in daily life to pass information quickly and clearly. When a school creates a poster for an Inter-House Sports competition, or a shop owner creates a signpost, they are using graphic design. Good design helps people understand information at a single glance.
The main reasons why graphic design is important include:
- Clear Communication: It helps to pass information in a way that is easy to read and understand.
- Grabbing Attention: Bright colours, beautiful images, and neat text attract people to read announcements.
- Professional Appearance: It makes school projects, business cards, and community flyers look neat, organized, and serious.
- Quick Identification: It helps people recognize brands, schools, or organizations instantly through logos and specific colours.
Principles of Graphic Design
Design principles are the rules that a designer must follow to create an effective and attractive visual layout. Three of the most fundamental principles are balance, contrast, and alignment.
Balance
Balance is the distribution of the visual weight of objects, colours, texture, and space in a design.
If a design has too many heavy elements on one side, it feels unstable. Balance can be achieved in two main ways:
- Symmetrical Balance: This occurs when elements are arranged evenly on both sides of a central line. For example, placing a large title in the exact middle with equal text on the left and right sides.
- Asymmetrical Balance: This occurs when different elements have equal visual weight but are not placed identically on both sides. For example, placing a large image on the left side balanced by a block of text on the right side.
Contrast
Contrast is the presentation of two or more elements in opposite ways to make key parts of a design stand out.
Contrast prevents a design from looking dull or hard to read. It can be created using different methods:
- Colour Contrast: Using dark text on a light background, or light text on a dark background. For example, black text on a yellow background is highly visible.
- Size Contrast: Making the main heading very large and the supporting details much smaller.
- Shape Contrast: Placing a circular image among rectangular text blocks to draw attention to the image.
Alignment
Alignment is the arrangement of design elements along a common invisible line to create order and connection.
Alignment ensures that nothing is placed randomly on the page. Proper alignment guides the reader’s eyes naturally from one piece of information to the next. The common types of alignment are:
- Left Alignment: Aligning text or images along the left margin. This is the most common alignment for reading.
- Right Alignment: Aligning elements along the right margin, often used for small decorative text or dates.
- Centre Alignment: Aligning elements along the middle axis, commonly used for titles, certificates, and invitation cards.
Observe the diagram below to see how these three principles are applied visually.
Introduction to Canva
Canva is a web-based graphic design platform that allows users to create visual content using pre-made layouts, images, and text tools.
Canva is highly popular because it does not require advanced computer design skills. It can be accessed on mobile phones, tablets, and desktop computers with an active internet connection.
Navigating the Canva Dashboard
When a user logs into Canva, the first screen they see is the dashboard. The dashboard contains several key areas:
- Search Bar: Located at the top of the screen, used to search for specific design templates like “school flyer” or “birthday card”.
- Template Categories: Quick links to popular design formats such as Presentations, Posters, Flyers, and Documents.
- Create a Design Button: A button located at the top right corner that allows users to start a design from scratch or choose custom dimensions.
- Recent Designs: A section that displays all the projects the user has previously worked on, allowing them to resume editing easily.
Key Tools in the Canva Editor
Once a template is selected or a new design is started, the user enters the Canva Editor. The main tools are located in the side panel:
- Templates Tab: Contains pre-designed layouts that can be customized with new text and colours.
- Text Tool: Allows users to add headings, subheadings, and body text to the design.
- Elements Tab: Contains shapes, lines, stickers, icons, and illustrations that can be added to the canvas.
- Uploads Tab: Allows users to import their own photos, school logos, or graphics from their computer or phone into Canva.
Observe the diagram below to understand the layout of the Canva Editor interface.
How to Create a Design Using Canva Templates
Using templates is the fastest way to create a professional design. Templates provide a pre-arranged layout that already follows the principles of design.
The procedure for creating a design from a template involves the following steps:
- Open a web browser, go to the Canva website, and log in.
- Type “School Flyer” or “Poster” into the search bar on the dashboard and press Enter.
- Browse through the available templates and click on one that matches the desired layout.
- Click on the “Customize this template” button to open it in the editor.
- Double-click on any existing text box to type new information, such as the school name or event date.
- Click on the “Share” button in the top right corner, select “Download”, choose the file type (such as PNG or PDF), and click “Download” to save the design to the device.
How to Add Text, Images, and Shapes in Canva
To make a template unique, a designer must know how to add and modify individual elements.
Adding and Formatting Text
The procedure for adding and formatting text involves the following steps:
- Click on the Text tab in the left sidebar.
- Click on “Add a heading” to place a large text box on the canvas.
- Type the desired text inside the box.
- Select the text and use the top toolbar to change the font style, font size, and text colour.
- Drag the edges of the text box to move it to the desired position on the canvas.
Adding and Adjusting Shapes
The procedure for adding and adjusting shapes involves the following steps:
- Click on the Elements tab in the left sidebar.
- Look under the “Shapes” category and click on a shape, such as a rectangle or circle, to add it to the canvas.
- Click on the shape to select it, then click the colour square in the top toolbar to change its colour.
- Drag the corner handles of the shape to resize it.
- Position the shape behind text to act as a background banner, ensuring high contrast.
Adding and Positioning Images
The procedure for adding and positioning images involves the following steps:
- Click on the Uploads tab in the left sidebar to use a personal photo, or click the Elements tab and search for a free photo.
- Click on the image to place it on the canvas.
- Drag the corners of the image to make it larger or smaller without distorting its proportions.
- Hold and drag the centre of the image to move it to the correct position, ensuring it aligns with the text and shapes.
Applying Design Principles to a Poster or Flyer Project
When creating a poster or flyer, the principles of balance, contrast, and alignment must be applied deliberately to make the final output look professional.
The following guidelines should be followed during the design process:
- Apply Balance: Place the main image or illustration in a central position, or balance a large image on one side with the event details on the other side. Avoid crowding all elements into one corner.
- Apply Contrast: Use a dark background colour (such as deep blue) with white or bright yellow text. Make the main heading at least twice as large as the body text so that it stands out immediately.
- Apply Alignment: Align all text blocks to the left margin or centre them perfectly. Use Canva’s automatic purple alignment guides that appear on the screen to ensure that text boxes, shapes, and images line up perfectly with one another.
Class Project: Creating a School Event Flyer
To practice these skills, students will create a simple flyer for a school event, such as a “JSS 1 Debate Competition” or “School Cultural Day”.
The project requirements are:
- Platform: Use Canva on a computer, tablet, or mobile phone.
- Template: Start with a basic flyer template.
- Content: Include the name of the event, the date, the venue, and a short invitation message.
- Visual Elements: Add at least one shape (to act as a text background) and one relevant image.
- Design Principles: Ensure the design demonstrates clear alignment (all text aligned to the centre or left), strong contrast (readable text colours), and proper balance.
Evaluation Guide
To assess understanding, students should perform the following tasks:
- Complete the school event flyer project in Canva and download the final design as an image file.
- Present the completed design to the class, pointing out the following details:
- How balance was achieved between the text and the images.
- How contrast was used to make the main heading easy to read from a distance.
- Which alignment style (left, right, or centre) was chosen for the text blocks and why.
