Paper Crafts

Performance Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. explain the meaning of paper crafts;
  2. state the steps in making paper crafts;
  3. identify the materials used for paper crafts;
  4. make paper crafts.

What Are Paper Crafts?

Paper crafts are fun things made by shaping, cutting, or folding paper.

People use paper to create many beautiful and useful objects. These objects can be toys, decorations for a room, or even gifts for friends and family. Making paper crafts helps children to be creative and use their hands.

Materials for Paper Crafts

To make paper crafts, some materials are needed. These materials help to cut, stick, and decorate the paper.

The common materials used for paper crafts include:

  1. Paper: This is the most important material. Paper can be white or come in many different colours. It is used to make the main body of the craft.
  2. Scissors: Scissors are used to cut paper into different shapes and sizes. For children, it is important to use safety scissors, which have blunt tips and are easier to handle. An adult should always supervise when children use scissors.
  3. Adhesive: Adhesives are sticky materials like paper gum or glue. They are used to stick different pieces of paper together. It is important to use non-toxic adhesives that are safe for children.
  4. Water: Water can be used for mixing some types of glue or for cleaning hands and tools after crafting.
  5. Bowl: A small bowl can be used to hold water or to mix glue if needed.

Steps in Making Paper Crafts

Making paper crafts usually follows some simple steps. These steps help to create the craft from start to finish.

The general steps in making paper crafts are:

  1. Plan: First, decide what paper craft to make. This could be a simple folded shape or a cut-out design.
  2. Gather Materials: Collect all the paper, scissors, glue, and other items needed for the craft.
  3. Cut or Fold: Use scissors to cut the paper into the required shapes, or fold the paper according to the design.
  4. Stick Together: If the craft has many parts, use glue to stick them together carefully.
  5. Decorate: Add colours, drawings, or other small pieces of paper to make the craft look beautiful.

How to Make a Simple Paper Fan

Making a simple paper fan is a good way to learn how to fold and shape paper. This craft uses basic folding skills and can be a fun decoration or a way to cool down.

The materials needed for a simple paper fan are:

  1. One rectangular piece of paper (any colour)
  2. Optional: A small amount of non-toxic glue

The procedure involves the following steps:

  1. Place the rectangular paper flat on a clean table.
  2. Fold a small strip of paper, about 1 to 2 centimetres wide, from one of the shorter edges. Make sure the fold is neat and straight.
  3. Turn the paper over to the other side.
  4. Fold another strip of the same size, making sure it lines up with the first fold.
  5. Continue folding the paper back and forth, like an accordion, until the entire paper is folded into a long, narrow strip.
  6. Hold the folded paper firmly in the middle.
  7. Fold the entire long, folded strip in half.
  8. Apply a small amount of glue to the two inner sides of the folded paper at the bottom, where the handle will be. Press them together firmly to create a handle.
  9. Gently open the top part of the folded paper to spread it out, forming the fan shape.
